MOSCOW, December 29 (RIA Novosti) - Russian aircraft maker MiG delivered in December a batch of four MiG-29K/KUB shipborne fighters to the Indian Navy under a contract concluded in 2010, the company said.
With the delivery, MiG "has fulfilled all its obligations for 2012 stipulated in the 2010 contract with the Indian Defense Ministry,” the company said in a statement.
In March 2010, Russia and India signed a $1.5-billion contract on the supply of 29 additional MiG-29K Fulcrum-D carrier-based fighter jets to New Delhi.

Last year Russia fulfilled its 2004 contract with the Indian Defense Ministry, supplying the country with 12 single-seat MiG-29Ks and four two-seat MiG-29KUBs.
The contracts for the jets also stipulate pilot training and aircraft maintenance, including the delivery of flight simulators and interactive ground and sea-based training systems.
The Indian Navy will base the MiG-29K squadron, dubbed the "Black Panthers" at an airfield in the state of Goa on India's west coast until INS Vikramaditya, the Soviet-built carrier originally named the Admiral Gorshkov, joins the Navy in the fall of 2013.
The MiG-29K is a navalized variant of the MiG-29 land-based fighter, and has folding wings, an arrester tail-hook, strengthened airframe and multirole capability. It can be armed with a wide variety of air-to-air and air-to-surface weaponry.

Cool we have all 16 MiG-29's in IN by now.:yahoo:

. .
If the contract for 12 + 4 MiG-29Ks was fulfilled last year, it means we have 20 MiG-29Ks now.

.
The Mig 29k is truly a great fighter! Many dont know how much it incorporates from other planes.
THIS IS NOT JUST A CARRIER VERSION OF THE MIG 29!

Just check this video from 26:30 and hear to what the designers say:

The article says that by 2010, all 16 migs ordered in 2004 were delivered.

Then the article says that these 4 completes the 2012 obligation of the 2010 contract, which was for 29 additional jets. Since we don't know what the yearly obligation was, we can only speculate how many we have in our inventory now. All we can say with certainity is that we have at least 20 (16+4). Possibly more. Mig 29K's production rate should be a lot higher than four per year for sure. We will probably have the entire complement of fighters well before we get the Vikramaditya.

I wonder why the IN did not go for the Zhuk-AE on the second batch, or order it to the same specs that the RuN ordered. In any case, these birds are sufficiently advanced to take on any fighter of any air force they are likely to encounter in the IOR.

Good news
But why didn't we get this from Indian news Source ???

. . .
NOT 16 but 19 Indeed...would have been 20 by now but 1 was crashed in russia...

.
One squadron IN near completion. :D

One squadron was completed in 2010. For the IN, a squadron is 16 jets, unlike 18-20 for the IAF.

NOT 16 but 19 Indeed...would have been 20 by now but 1 was crashed in russia...

It wasn't the IN's mig that crashed, that one belonged to the Mig company itself. We have at least 20 with these four.

Well there is certainly an ambiguity on the 16th mig-29k:

15 MiG-29Ks Inducted for Carrier Operations

On May 14, Minister of Defense Shri A K Antony told Lok Sabha, "Fifteen new MiG 29K fighter aircraft have been inducted for carrier borne operations. These aircraft will operate from INS Vikramaditya, which is planned for induction in December 2012. Contract has been concluded for acquisition of additional 29 MiG 29K fighter aircraft to strengthen the air combat capability of the Navy."

The status of the 16th MiG-29K is not clear. It is possible the aircraft will be retained by the Intensive Flying Training Unit (IFTU) raised by the IN to handle the induction of its new Mig-29K/KUB fighter aircraft into the Fleet Air Arm which started arriving at INS Hansa since December 2009.

No, the reports at the time made it clear that the jet that crashed belonged to the Mig factory, and was meant for their own testing purposes. The production lot meant for the IN was different, and those haven't crashed. All 16 were handed over to the IN. As the link above suggests, it is possible that only 15 are in operational service, and the 16th is retained by the IFTU to develop tactics and understand the capabilities of the fighter fully. But all 16 are with the IN for sure, including the one at IFTU.

man actually Indian navy got only 15 mig-29k because 16th was crashed in russia itself by a russian pilot before inducting in Indian navy......so mig bear the cost and promised to give one more.
