Russia and Sri Lanka are in discussions over a contract on the delivery of Gepard 3.9-class frigates to Colombo, the deputy director of Russia's Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) told Sputnik.

LANGKAWI (Malaysia) (Sputnik) — An export version of Gepard-class Project 1166.1 frigates, Gepard 3.9 may be used in wartime to resist the engagement of enemy aircraft, ships and submarines; conduct escort missions; carry out of patrol duties; and provide fire support to landing missions and mine-laying.


"The contract is currently at the stage of discussion," Mikhail Petukhov said at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition LIMA-2017 where he leads the Russian delegation.

Russia delivered two Gepard 3.9s to Vietnam in 2011, with two other guard vessels under construction in Russia's Republic of Tatarstan.

how does Sri lanka dare to purchase frigate for her navy ? huh ! ! ! ! who is the enemy ? ! ! ! ! India must declare a non-negotiable defence deal with Sri lanka to ensure Sri lanka must not have any military in Sri lanka ! ! !

These Gepards are one heck of an addition, can fire Kalibre Cruise missiles with a range of 1,500 kms, enough to cover the entire South India and can reach up to Mumbai.

We need to discuss the practicality of these Russian vessels as they are built for operations in relatively milder climates and different sea conditions. We should not wet our selves just for the appearance of the crafts.

I think the biggest advantage of these will be to secure the shipping lanes against Piracy from East Africa. The added security will encourage shipping operators to transit through our ports and bring in revenue.
