Pakistani PM Imran Khan has said his country is looking for Russian arms, and there’s a lot that Moscow can offer, be it main battle tanks and fighter jets, or helicopters and air defense systems, a military expert told RT.

For at least several decades, Pakistan’s military has relied on Western and Chinese vendors when upgrading or expanding their arsenals. Now, times are about to change as the South Asian country is looking at Russian-made weapons systems and is keen on building military-to-military ties with Moscow.

“Previously, Pakistan was tied to the US, and, as we all know, India was tied to the Soviet Union,” Khan said in an interview with Sputnik, adding that the world is past the Cold War-era.

We hope that our tension with India decreases, so we do not have to buy arms because we want to spend money on human development. But, yes, we are looking for arms from Russia, and I know our military is already in touch with the Russian military.

Almost all weapons systems – land or sea-based – could be used by Pakistani armed forces, but the likeliest candidates are tanks, helicopters and air defense systems, explains military expert and retired colonel Mikhail Khodarenok.

The Pakistani Army may be inclined to procure the T-90, a time-proven main battle tank (MBT) that’s been in use in neighboring India since the 2000s, Khodarenok suggested. Islamabad recently declined Ukrainian or Chinese offers, but its tank fleet is still in need of upgrade.

Russian-made helicopters may be of interest too, the expert said. The Pakistani Air Force has ordered four Mi-35Ms – the latest version of the Mi-24 Hind attack helicopter – and is already flying six Mi-171s.

Aircraft aside, more and more countries, including Islamabad’s rival India, are looking at the S-400 air defense system, and Pakistan is no exception. However, procuring the sophisticated weapon could be unaffordable for the Pakistanis, Khodarenok said. Instead, they may opt for shorter-range systems like Buk, Thor or Pantsir-S2.

There’s plenty of reasons why Russia may want to offer its state-of-the-art armaments to Pakistan, he stated. Pakistan is an emerging arms trade market, and its demand for Russian weapons may amount to a whopping $8-9 billion in coming years.

"Russian weapons have excellent reputation and are respected in Pakistan since the war in Afghanistan".

Apart from money, politics also plays a role when discussing prospective arms deals. Offering cutting-edge weapons to Pakistan may be tricky as Russia has long enjoyed close defense ties with India, where the western neighbor is considered a major enemy.

But political considerations shouldn’t stop Moscow from engaging with Islamabad, Khodarenok warned. Russia has always been loyal to its Indian customers, but that attitude did not necessarily pay off in recent years, the expert believes. India is increasingly drifting towards the US and Europe, and Russia “should abandon stereotypes and build closer ties with Pakistan.”

but fact is
We dont have money and the reasons are
  • current govt imposed much more taxes to those 1% class who was already paying them.
  • New investors are not encouraged but discouraged through extra taxes
  • Uprising in KPK is also starting ( PTM ) , we need to resolve it before it becomes another 71. Baluchistan issue is not settling either.
  • We need to pay back loan amount.
  • Chinese tech companies in Pakistan is not investment but loan and their own workers job. ( civil sector will get benefit though i.e roads / links / rails etc )
  • No industry is coming which will give export boost

Result another fucked up govt which army will admit after 20 years

Pakistan will get over its current financial difficulties, eventually. It may take a couple of years, but it will happen. Given its neighbourhood, Pakistan has no choice but to maintain a relatively strong military. Unfortunately, this often has to be at the cost of other priorities such as education, healthcare, etc. That is what happened in the past, and may happen again in the future.

But the highlighted part of the story is what is more important. Moscow's perceived loyalty to India has not paid off. And the Russians are increasingly, more openly, saying that their partisanship in favour of India may no longer hold.

Russia cannot subsidize weapon sales to pakistan
if pakistan has the funds it is a different story
That is true. While Pakistan is nowhere near the size of China or India in terms of its ability to import weapons, Russia now sees Pakistan not just as a market, but a potential ally. The conditions have never been more favourable than now for an alliance to emerge. Not quite like the one enjoyed between China and Pakistan. But Russia would definitely welcome Pakistan as a member of the emerging bloc lead by China and itself.

For the above two reasons, Russia has an interest in the financial and political stability of Pakistan. That can be promoted in a number of ways, including diplomatic support, improved trade relations, intelligence sharing, cultural exchanges, etc. The idea is to help Pakistan be strong enough to carry its own diplomatic weight, support the bloc militarily, and purchase Russian defense equipment. It has to be a win-win.

All of you wrong... Pakistan has enough to even tackle the rafale. Pakistan won't be going for weapons and platforms, Pakistan will be going for tech transfer and know how.
Pakiatan ....by in investing in homegrown is doing a great job....

.
There is no reason to not go for both. Purchase of some systems, and tech transfer of others.
We don't wanna be stuck in maintenance hell hole like india...buying shiny new weapons is fine and dandy but unless we only use them as shiny trophies just sitting their waiting for parades, it will turn into an insane maintenance nightmare real fast! We have steam lined our technologies in all the 3 forces and maintenance is breezy smooth, 85% of our equipment is battle ready and any given time. We should learn and manufacture as per OUR requirements, not buy and change our requirements to suit what was bought.

@red there is no uprising in KPK, PTM has even less following than ANP. 99.9% of us Pukhtoons don't support them
