Even as Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan appealed to well-off people and philanthropists in Peshawar to donate generously to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (SKMHRC) in Lahore, a whopping amount of 10 million rupees was collected in just 10 minutes, well before the target.
The hospital, located in the heart of the Punjab province, was founded by Imran, one of Pakistan's most illustrious cricketers. As a charitable institute, it is funded predominantly from the donations of friends and well-wishers from around the country and across the world.
"We have spent nine billion rupees for the delivery of free and quality medical treatment to cancer patients in the hospital. We collect two billion rupees from Pakistanis every year for the treatment of the poor patients," The News quoted Imran, as saying, while addressing the annual donation party for the hospital.
During the last one year, Shaukat Khanum Healthcare System had launched three mega projects, including an out-patient chemotherapy in Karachi diagnosing centre, where poor patients were being treated without any cost, he added.
The other two projects are Shaukat Khanum Memorial cancer hospital in Peshawar and another inpatient unit in Lahore, to double the capacity of the centre, the cricketer-turned-politician said.
The construction of the cancer hospital in Peshawar would cost 400 million rupees, he added.
The PTI chief said that the total budget of the hospital is 3.6 billion rupees, and that half of the money was raised with donations from the people.
