DARWIN: An Australian Muslim woman has complained that she was told to remove her face veil during a job interview at a Northern Territory hospital in Darwin.

According to reports, a doctor at Royal Darwin Hospital asked the young woman to remove her veil during an administration job interview.

The woman, however, refused to do so, and filed an official complaint.

The Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Commission officers have launched an investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, Northern Territory Islamic Society President, Adil Jamil, said that it was considered "offensive" to ask a woman to take off her hijab.

"It's against their religious beliefs. It can seriously hurt their inner self," The Herald Sun quoted Jamil, as saying.

"Under traditional Islamic view, a woman cannot show her face to any man except her husband and male relatives," he added.

He further said that there were about 2000 Muslims in the territory, but less than two percent wore a veil.

"They see it as reinforcing their religious beliefs and inner satisfaction," Jamil said.

The case comes at a time when several western countries are following France's lead in banning the wearing of the hijab in public.

.....why would she want to cover her face for an interview?

. .
what was wrong with the woman?

an interview with a veil on!!! who knows who/what is behind that veil :P

well it is becoming hard to practice our religion in west day by day. What can i say here, if i a women wishes to wear hijab, that should be her own choice. She should not be forced to wear or take it off.

I still did not understand one thing. Did she went there for a work/job (that we usually do by hands) or for modelling where they wanted to see her look? Hijab still shows your entire body except your hairs so i don't understand why west is becoming so narrow minded nowadays. In order to promote freedom they are continuasly snatching the freedom of Muslims :D - well its australia so not part of europe but everywhere its same :)

I wonder if one day West will ban wearing dress in the name of freedom or equal rights opportunity. There are some clothes that only rich peoples can afford to buy, so ban the clothes to avoid discrimination :)

Nothing new here, remember the violence against indian's. That interviewier must have been one hell of a tharki or just want to provoke a reaction. Id wish they would just go an ban the damn thing so muslims would stop getting all the negative press.

Zaki if she is showing her face that is fine, also there is no such rule to wear veil in Islam as I understand from what I heard of. What is the guarantee that some terrorist might not seek in place of her?

I think it was a Hijab in which case i think doctor was wrong however if it was a burqa then she definitely should have removed it.

What is the difference? Sorry I do not understand and if she is showing her face than it is wrong to not give her the job or ask such thing.

I am in great favour of banning Burqa anywhere in the world wherever the risk factor of terrorism is involved. I wouldn't mind if they ban burqa all over the world. But here its not burqa and i am talking about Hijab. I have always raised my voice over the banning of Hijab which is a short piece of cloth.

She was wearing a Hijab, not a Veil! Theres a big difference between the both!

Why are indians so obsessed with Muslims and our religious values?

thx, I did not knew this was called Hijab. There is nothing wrong in this and if someone was wearing this, it should be fine.

So Hijab is the cloth that covers half the face and Burqa is the complete veil ?

If that is so, then I feel that Burqa should not be allowed even in Islamic countries. It's like a mask and it creates inequality. Hijab should be a matter of choice as it does not hide the wearers identity.

However, when people migrate to western countries they should also be aware of the customs of that country.

Yes true and burqa is not islamic attire. It is more to do with culture

well wrong, it should be upon the individual's choice. looking at current circumstances it can be banned for some time until everything goes calm once again and i am up for it but end of the day it should be women's own choice. If she wishes to wear that long viel under the peaceful circumstances why others has a problem with it?

true, as a Muslim we must follow the rule of god and the rule of the land. It is said to follow both but if either of rule is contradicting with each other then you must adhere with the rule of God instead

Thats a general opinion of the muslim community with all due respect to my non-muslim friends

Certainly the majority would agree that a hijab shouldn't be any problem anywhere at all. But this may not be the complete story. Here is another report:

A Muslim woman is taking action against a Darwin hospital after allegedly being told to remove her face veil during a job interview.

The Territory Anti-Discrimination Commission has launched an investigation after a doctor allegedly asked her to show her face when she applied for an administration position at Royal Darwin, the Northern Territory News reports.

She refused to remove the veil — a part of the traditional Muslim hijab head covering — and has filed an official complaint.

NT Islamic Society president Adil Jamil described the incident as "offensive".

"It's against their religious beliefs," the report quoted Mr Jamil as saying.

"It can seriously hurt their inner self.

"Under traditional Islamic view, a woman cannot show her face to any man except her husband and male relatives."

The case is the first of its kind to be tested in the NT legal system.

So it's not yet clear to anyone whether an actual face veil was involved and stipulated as "a part" of the Hijab ...

I am sure further details will emerge.

It was her choice to wear the Hijab and she has every right to do so but it is the employers right to refuse you a job. Seems like this woman is another attention seeker. If she can't understand the employer/employee relationship then she is not ready for a job in the real world yet.
