Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday asked how long could her country bear such a huge burden of more than 1 million Rohingya refugees.

More than 1.1 million Rohingyas sheltered in Bangladesh are causing a long-term social problems in the country, as many of them are engaged in arms, drug, and women trafficking, she told newly-appointed Canadian High Commissioner, Lilly Nicholls, who called on her at her Sangsad Bhaban office.

The Prime Minister said Bangladesh is providing temporary shelter to 100,000 Rohingyas on Bhasan Char Island where they will get better facilities.

The High Commissioner said that Canada will always support Bangladesh in this regard, and that her country is creating an additional fund, through charity, for Rohingyas.

She also said Canada is highly pleased to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties with Bangladesh, while also congratulating Bangladesh on the celebration of the golden jubilee of its Independence and the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Noting that Canada has been supporting Bangladesh since its Liberation War, Sheikh Hasina said Canada had worked closely with Bangladesh since the beginning of the Covid pandemic and thanked it for donating vaccines and equipment.

She appreciated Canada saying that the number of Bangladeshi students is increasing in its universities and requested the Canadian government to include Bangladesh in the Student Direct Stream programme.

"We have special relations with Canada," she said.

Both discussed the Russia-Ukraine conflict and agreed that war always causes suffering to people.

As both agreed that bilateral trade and business can grow further, Sheikh Hasina said that she looks forward to boosting trade and investment with Canada and that the large Bangladeshi diaspora in Canada is positively contributing in enhancing people-to-people contact between the two nations.

The Premier said that she expected that Nicholls would play her role in strengthening the existing excellent relations between the two countries, and assured all possible support to her for discharging her duties.

Ambassador-at-large M. Ziauddin and Principal Secretary Ahmad Kaikaus were present at the meeting.

Thats what you deserve after being PM for 15 years and neglecting defence every single year. Stupid shortsightedness created this mess. You can come up with all kinds of nice words but in the end if you cant defend yourself, sooner or later someone is gonna take the opportunity to disrespect sovereignity.

No wonder Myanmar and India goes around n think Bangladesh is a pushover.

Rohingyas breed like Rabbits, they have like 6 kids per family. Plus they don't have much to contribute to society considering most of them are brought up in ghettos and shanty towns, if Myanmar helped them assimilate into society and be useful instead of killing them this wouldn't be a problem to begin with

Idiot PM, this is how you treat your own kind? Rohingya are ethnically bengalis from BD. Hasina needs to be taken out
An enemy of mujeeb family must have suggested this name for her at birth. Wicked witch of Bengal would have been more appropriate.

You are very wrong. Rohingya may be ethnically and linguistically Chittagonian but they are not from today's BD, at least not after 1826. They are the locals of Arakan.

Note also that Arakan was an independent kingdom before it was occupied and annexed by Burma in 1826.

Learn from the history instead of polluting this thread with ignorance.

Everyone wants a safe place to live . They cannot make their own in mayanmur . Neither can you help them do it so Bangladeshis Governments should take actions early and give this moslems people a safe place to live. As a Pashtun from Pakistan we give millions Pashtuns from Afghanistan safety and homes here during conflict or they stayed here no issue for us. I do not understand why you do this to your own kind claiming them to be alien Burmese to your culture for when they are not!

aaaa....please forgive us for not having type 56 smgs...we are too poor to buy them :cry: only chuper rich country like pakisthan can afford them !!
if your border guards are not well armed then what you expect from enemy ? they have pumped 1mn people into your country because they know your forces can not fight back . as a pm haseena is the one to keep forces at low budget and low arms . think logically before shooting messenger .

BGB itself is a fighting force. This started when it was called EPR or East Pakistan Rifles which was a mixed troop consisting of Bengali, Pathan, and Punjabi. Guns that you see in the pictures are not relevant. In times of border tensions, they are quickly equipped with better weapons.

Our BGB is capable to fight the regular army of Burma whenever needed, but not against heavy weapons. BA troops usually do not come to their support immediately but are kept on standby in Ramu. about 50 km from the border.

BGB fighting history is glorious against the Indian troops. BSF troops do not really challenge our BGB. BSF is purely a border security force but not a fighting force.
