Rlys develops new fuel-efficient technology
The Indian Railways is in the process of developing a highly fuel efficient technology that will reduce fuel consumption by 4 per cent and also emissions by 20-30 per cent, a railway ministry official said on Monday.

The technology, Common Rail Electronic Direct Fuel Injection (CReDI) system will be introduced in the fleet of diesel locomotives. The final testing is being carried out at the large bore engine laboratory at Lucknow. Developed by Research Development Standard Organisation (RDSO), the research wing of the Railways, the technology will be produced through a joint venture by an Indian manufacturer with a Swiss firm, said the official.

In the long run, the complete manufacturing, assembly and testing of the CreDI system will be done in India, placing the country in the league of a few who possess capabilities to design and manufacture such sophisticated systems for large bore engines like locomotives, trucks, battle tanks etc.

Besides railways, many other domestic industries may gain from the technology, the official claimed. Common rail systems has been hailed world over for its ability to dramatically reduce fuel consumption of diesel vehicles.

Indian locos are already in good shape, it will only boost their capability to deliver more results with minimal loss which is urgently required to overcome the incurring loss especially in passenger category. cherry on the cake is that it will make less bad impact on environment.

These engines are smooth and good for sound pollution as well as energy fuel saver too

What about raising productivity and efficiency??? How about providing dedicated freight lines to our ports and mines???

Indian Railways used to transport most of the goods of the country but their share has fallen from 90 to 33 percent now. We need to revamp the infrastructure to provide a dedicated freight corridor and we need investment to connect all major ports. Hope our govt. wakes up....

Indian locos are 1 of the most fuel efficient in the world as they are based on US & Swiss tech. Regarding market share, most damage has been done by politicians. I don't know whether you are aware or not but in India if 1 passenger train is introduced on the track, it displace 4 goods train from the track. It is the cruel realty. And railways have understood it that's why they running till now successfully, if not in profit then also not in loss on average basis. It is big feat in itself.

I read sometime back that we have a loss of few hundred billion dollars because of transportation delays. Our freight trains are one of the slowest in the world and they share the same tracks as the passenger trains. Priority is always given to passenger trains and if they are delayed then the freight trains have to wait it out. These delays run into days sometime. Imagine the productivity loss because of these delays.

We have increased the passenger travel but at the cost of freight. We have not added much track since independence. Ninety percent of all the track we have was laid before 1947 by the British. In 65 years of independent India we have added only 10000 miles of track. When will our politicians realize that our growth falters because we don't improve our basic infrastructure.

Well this will change by 2017-2018 Western Dedicated Freight Corridor & a year or 2 Later Eastern one will also be operational
I herd there was also some talks about establishing one in the south
So till then all we can do is wait

When it comes to fuel bill, the Railways are the first and next comes the mobile towers installed by the telecoms (read the generators associated) are the biggest consumers. So these two must see how to cut the expenditure on fuel.

So what kind of investment are we talking about?

There is a Rail that runs with no engine in japan using only magnetic field and its runs at speed of 535kmph . when will we get this kinda tech ?

The plan to construct dedicated freight corridors across the country marks a strategic inflection point in the history of Indian Railways that has essentially run mixed traffic across its network. Once completed, the dedicated freight corridors will enable Indian Railways to improve its customer orientation and meet market needs more effectively. Creation of rail infrastructure on such a scale - unprecedented in independent India – is also expected to drive the establishment of industrial corridors and logistic parks along its alignment.

In the first phase, DFCCIL will be constructing two corridors – the Western DFC and Eastern DFC- spanning a total length of about 3300 route km. The Eastern Corridor, starting from Ludhiana in Punjab will pass through the states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and terminate at Dankuni in West Bengal. The Western Corridor will traverse the distance from Dadri to Mumbai, passing through the states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Most of the Indian territory is already covered under railway network. Only J&K & North east has limited connectivity. Kashmir valley will be soon covered by railway line till Pakistan border then a new line will be constructed to Leh via Kargil & there will be another line which will pass through one of the most difficulty places in the world(Manali to Leh). In north east I don't think we should expand railway in Sikkim till China border for now. In other areas like AP & southern eastern part of NE is being covered rapidly as I write here. So almost all of India will be covered with little increase in line length. What we need is to average speed, top speed is good enough for now. We should increase the track length instead of line length. More lines should be made 4 track based instead of two. It will free up the lines a bit which we can utilize to increase the average speed.
