TOKYO (Reuters) - Chinese gold medallists Bao Shanju and Zhong Tianshi wore badges featuring the head of the country’s former leader Mao Zedong during a medal ceremony on Monday, in a potential breach of Olympic rules on the display of political paraphernalia.

The duo wore the badges, commonplace in China for half a century but a potential breach of Article 50 of the Olympic charter, after retaining the women’s cycling team sprint title at the Izu Velodrome.

The International Olympic Committee last month relaxed Article 50 to allow gestures, such as taking the knee, on the field of play provided athletes do so without disruption and with respect for fellow competitors.

Politics on the podium are still banned, however.

The IOC has been contacted for comment.

Japan, Izu (Reuters) -Chinese team sprinter won the first gold medal in the Olympic track cycling program as the Coral and Zhong Tianshi won the Izu Velodrome on Monday.

The duo broke the world record in the first round, slightly slower in the final, but enough to defeat Germany and maintain the title.

If the opening track day was to go by fans who were allowed to enter the venue, the only indoor arena in the Olympics that would allow it would be a treat.

The situation on the fast track has been reported by the riders, and the trackers of the German women’s team have also set world records, erasing the British mark from Rio five years ago.

The women’s team sprint final was a showdown between Olympic champion China and world champion Germany with Emma Hinze and Rhea Friedrich in tandem.

The Chinese surpassed it in 0.085 seconds.

For Chung, who won the Rio title at Gong Jinjie, it was the second consecutive Olympic gold medal.

“I’ve had a lot of problems over the last few years and it feels great. It’s amazing to me because everything was a problem,” Zhong said, referring to a knee injury. I told the group.

“When I entered the final, I said’Just do it’.”

TOKYO, Aug 3 (Reuters) - The International Olympic Committee on Tuesday asked the Chinese team for a report on why two of its medallists appeared on the podium wearing badges featuring the head of the country's former leader Mao Zedong.

Gold medal cyclists Bao Shanju and Zhong Tianshi wore the badges during a medal ceremony on Monday, in a potential breach of Olympic rules on the display of political paraphernalia.

"We contacted the Chinese Olympic Committee and asked them for a report on the situation," IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said. "We are looking into the matter."

The duo wore the badges, commonplace in China for half a century but a potential breach of Rule 50 of the Olympic charter, after retaining the women's cycling team sprint title at the Izu Velodrome.

While the IOC last month relaxed Rule 50 to allow gestures, such as taking the knee on the field of play provided athletes do so without disruption and with respect for fellow competitors, it has banned any such gestures on the podium.

The IOC is also investigating a gesture made on the podium by American shotput silver medallist Raven Saunders which the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee ruled was not disrespectful of any other competitors.

Saunders raised her arms in an X above her head, which she later indicated was an expression of support for the oppressed.

The USOPC said the gesture did not breach its rules as it was a "peaceful expression in support of racial and social justice (that) was respectful of her competitors".

Why give a chance to Anglolympics? Clearly when it can be used under the laws of olympics?it sets a bad precedent for future politicization of olympics? nuts.

China should not apologize even if the gold medal is cancelled or even withdrawn from the Olympics and stopped hosting the Winter Olympics.

The West is really afraid of Chairman Mao.

Someone in ZhiHu(China's quora) once asked: who is the greatest man in Chinese history. 99% of the answers were Mao.

This shows that Mao is not only a political symbol in China, but also a national spirit and values.

nonsense. wanna bring political propaganda in Olympics games? Anyway Chinese sports/Olympic officials already promised the international Olympic committee it wont happen again(next time the penalty will be much more harsh than a warning) and the IOC has closed the case. They can go back home to china and parade Mao's pictures/symbols etc and all they want, but don't bring it to the Olympics.

British athletes can wear Boris Johnson badges considering Britain is governed under the authoritarian dictatorship Boris Johnson regime.

which is dumb, because the IOC is allowing athletes to do gestures on the podium. specifically " They're now allowed to gesture on fields of play, as long as they don't disrupt anything and do it respectfully " i would like to know in what way is the mao pin disruptive to the sport and how was having it on their shirt disrespectful?
