UAVs used to collect evidence around the spot.
The absconding duo, including the prime suspect, in the TCS employee murder case was arrested by a special team in the wee hours of Wednesday when they were fleeing by the Chennai-Howrah Mail near Kolkata. Police sources said the two were identified as Ujan Mandal and Indrajith Mandal, both aged 21 and hailed from Malda, in West Bengal.
Ujan Mandal is the prime accused, who stabbed the techie with a kitchen knife he was carrying when she spat on his face after he sexually assaulted her.
Uttam Mandal and Ram Mandal, who were arrested earlier, told the investigating officers that the absconding duo had left for their hometown soon after police recovered the body on February 22. Uttam was distantly related to Ujan. The duo in custody had told the investigating officials that they left on Monday night by the Chennai-Howrah Mail, which was scheduled to reach Howrah by 4.10 am on Wednesday morning.
The special team comprising CB-CID DSP Aravindhan, Thirukalukundram police inspector K Elangovan and others flew to Kolkata and reached Kharagpur Junction, which is about 110 km before Howrah and nabbed the accused from an unreserved coach. The team searched the train one compartment at a time and nabbed the duo from the third coach from the engine. This has taken the total number of accused who have been nabbed to four.
Asked about how they located the duo, an officer privy to the investigation said they had the pictures of Uttam and Indrajith; and they knew the only option the youth had to reach their hometown was this train. “We sent our team by air. They located the stations the train had reached and boarded the train. They arrested the duo before they could alight at their destination,” he said.
Meanwhile, a partial reconstruction of the crime was carried out at the crime scene with inputs from Uttam and Ram, who were taken to Siruseri from CB-CID headquarters in SIDCO Complex, Guindy. The duo demonstrated to the investigating officers how they intercepted the woman and committed the crime.
The kitchen knife used to stab the victim as well as her ear studs and ring were recovered from the duo. They were remanded to police custody until March 4.
However, a CB-CID handout released later in the evening claimed that only Ujan Mandal had been arrested and the officials were tightlipped about the detention of Indrajith Mandal.
Ujan was produced before a jurisdictional court in West Bengal, which issued him a transit warrant until March 2. Meanwhile, police are awa-
iting a forensic test report to ascertain whether the victim was raped before being killed. The victim, the 23-year-old employee of TCS, went missing Valentine’s Day eve and her body was found nine days later, barely 500 metres from the main gate of TCS.
