MQ-9 Reaper

The MQ-9 Reaper is the primary offensive strike unmanned aerial vehicle for the U.S. Air Force. Given its significant loiter time, wide-range sensors, multi-mode communications suite, and precision weapons -- it provides a unique capability to perform strike, coordination, and reconnaissance against high-value, fleeting, and time-sensitive targets.

Reapers can also perform the following missions and tasks: intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, close air support, combat search and rescue, precision strike, buddy-laser, convoy/raid overwatch, route clearance, target development, and terminal air guidance.

The Reaper is part of a remotely piloted aircraft system. A fully operational system consists of several sensor/weapon-equipped aircraft, ground control station, Predator Primary Satellite Link, and spare equipment along with operations and maintenance crews for deployed 24-hour missions.

The basic crew consists of a rated pilot to control the aircraft and command the mission, and enlisted aircrew member to operate sensors and weapons as well as a mission coordinator, when required. To meet combatant commanders' requirements, the Reaper delivers tailored capabilities using mission kits containing various weapons and sensor payload combinations.

The MQ-9 baseline system carries the Multi-Spectral Targeting System, which has a robust suite of visual sensors for targeting. The MTS-B integrates an infrared sensor, color/monochrome daylight TV camera, image-intensified TV camera, laser designator, and laser illuminator. The full-motion video from each of the imaging sensors can be viewed as separate video streams or fused.

The unit also incorporates a laser range finder/designator, which precisely designates targets for employment of laser-guided munitions, such as the Guided Bomb Unit-12 Paveway II. The Reaper is also equipped with a synthetic aperture radar to enable future GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munitions targeting. The MQ-9 can also employ four laser-guided missiles, Air-to-Ground Missile-114 Hellfire, which possess highly accurate, low-collateral damage, anti-armor and anti-personnel engagement capabilities.

The remotely piloted aircraft can be disassembled and loaded into a single container for deployment worldwide. The entire system can be transported in the C-130 Hercules, or larger aircraft. The MQ-9 aircraft operates from standard U.S. airfields with clear line-of-sight to the ground data terminal antenna, which provides line-of-sight communications for takeoff and landing. The PPSL provides over-the-horizon communications for the aircraft and sensors.

The primary concept of operations, remote split operations, employs a launch-and-recovery ground control station for take-off and landing operations at the forward operating location, while the crew based in continental United States executes command and control of the remainder of the mission via beyond-line-of-sight links. Remote split operations result in a smaller number of personnel deployed to a forward location, consolidate control of the different flights in one location, and as such, simplify command and control functions as well as the logistical supply challenges for the weapons system.

The U.S. Air Force proposed the MQ-9 Reaper system in response to the Department of Defense directive to support initiatives of overseas contingency operations. It is larger and more powerful than the MQ-1 Predator, and is designed to execute time-sensitive targets with persistence and precision, and destroy or disable those targets. The "M" is the DOD designation for multi-role, and "Q" means remotely piloted aircraft system. The "9" indicates it is the ninth in the series of remotely piloted aircraft systems.

* the price suggests a 100 of them not 18.. Even if they were at $20 million each!.. maybe this is just a first batch.. Since the Unit cost is US$15.9 million (flyaway cost, 2019)..

*Other sources say MQ-9 Reapers have a unit cost of roughly $64 million, which includes four aircraft..

Would love to hear their honest assessment in comparison with both Wing Loongs they operate. There has to be some advantage to the US drone being that they've been deploying the Wing Loong II and Wing Loon 10 and now are purchasing a very large investment in US drones which my guess will turn into much more than us the MQ-9 series and most likely will move to the other stealth drones including Loyal Wingmen to their newly acquired F-35s.

Can the UAE pilots keep them from being captured by Iran?

When it comes to the deal of the MQ-9B, we can say that it is very impressive and comes with amazing equipment, this deal is a real Force Multiplier..

The UAE Air Force has ordered 18 MQ-9Bs, all of them Weapons-Ready, that is, capable of playing a Strike Role, but at the same time, with additional equipment that can be considered as a Multirole, it can be equipped to perform various roles..

The drones will come with the latest version of the Raytheon MTS sensor and aim system, or what is known as MTS-D..The system is the third generation of the MTS family, which entered service in 2017 and has impressive detection, monitoring and tracking capabilities, and a wide range of sensors that cannot be mentioned here, the MH-60R helicopter carries this MTS sensor..

All Drone aircrafts will come with Lynx AN / APY-8 industrial aperture radar with ground targets tracking feature, this radar will enable the UAE MQ-9 radar to detect objects at a range of 80 km..

The Drones will be equipped with Link-16 connections through which it will be able to transfer and share data with all air components, command and control centers, in addition to SATCOM satellite links and IFF identification systems.

The SeaSpray 7500 AESA radar is a wonderful additional equipment, which has a range of more than 450 km..

The aircraft will also carry Leonardo's digital spy and interception system, which was recently announced by the MQ-9B under the name SAGE 750 Electronic Surveillance Measures System.
The system will enable the Drones to collect, classify, and geolocate radar emissions, and save them in the system's library..

The Emirati MQ-9B will carry a sensor package for the anti-Submarine Warfare ..
This package will include Kits through which three types of Sonobuoys that can be launched namely; AN / SSQ-36B thermometric sonobuoys; AN / SSQ-53G passive sonobuoys; AN-SSQ-62F active sonoboys which are in service with both MH-60R helicopters and P-8 anti-submarine aircrafts..

Besides that ..it will carry a wide range of ammunition, which includes until this moment. (AGM-114R Hellfire + GBU-12 + GBU-58) in addition to SDB I small diameter bombs..

Wow....UAE is armed to the teeth. Guess they can now intervene more in foreign wars like Yemen/Libya where they have been present for some time now, this together with the ChInese drones they already operate will help keep their military capabilities to a war footing . Good purchase. 👍🏾

whay bad in chineese?
There is nothing bad about Chinese drone. If Chinese drone are bad, why would US export MQ-9B to UAE?

In terms of political alliance, UAE is closer to China or US? I dont think we need an expert to tell u that. It will be the same case as Jordan. UAE need to thank China for making high tech US weapon export to UAE possible.
