A case has been filed in a Cox's Bazar court over the killing of retired Army Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed in a police firing. The case was filed by Major Sinha's sister Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous on Wednesday (August 5th). Nine policemen, including Liakat Ali, inspector of the Baharchhara police investigation center in Teknaf, and Pradeep Kumar Das, OC of Teknaf police station, have been charged in the case.
Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan was shot dead at the Baharchhara police investigation center on the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive road around 9:30 pm on July 31. Nine policemen present at the time of the incident have been charged in the case.
On Wednesday, court judge Tamanna Farah took cognizance of the criminal application and directed the Teknaf police station to record it as a regular case. The judge also asked RAB-15 to submit a report within the next seven days.
Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous, elder sister of slain Major Sinha, filed a complaint in the Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court at noon. The plaintiff alleged in the statement that Inspector Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan was shot dead by Inspector Liakat Ali on the instructions of Teknaf Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradeep Kumar Das.
The plaintiff mentioned in the statement that shortly after the incident, OC Pradeep Kumar Das came to the spot. He hurled insults at Major Sinha, who was still alive, and kicked him in the body. When the death was confirmed, Major Sinha was taken to Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital in a 'bug car'.
The other accused in the case are Sub-Inspector (SI) Nanda Dulal Rakshit, Constable Safanur Karim, Kamal Hossain, Abdullah Al Mamun, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Liton Mia, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Tutul and Constable Mohammad Mofast.
According to the case statement, Major (Retd.) Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan was coming to Cox's Bazar in his own private car with Marine Drive at around 9.30 pm on July 31 after filming a video for a YouTube channel. At that time, when the police reached the investigation center near Shamlapur Bazar of Baharchhara Union of Teknaf Upazila, the vehicle number 1 accused Liaqat and accused number 3 SI Nanda Dulal stopped the vehicle. At this time Major Sinha introduced himself. Even then, the cameraman who was with Sinha dragged Sifat out of the car. At that moment, Sifat raised his hands and introduced Sinha who was sitting in the car. Even after introducing himself, the police used foul language. At one point, Inspector Liaquat let out a roar and said, "I have seen many majors like you."Sinha also got out of the car. Sinha fell to the ground after firing a few rounds at the moment. When Major Sinha tried to flee for his life, the police grabbed him and threw him back to the ground.
Inspector Liaquat even fired one more round to confirm the death. After confirming the death, Teknaf police took him to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital. The doctor on duty there declared him dead.
The lawsuit alleges that two cases were filed with the Teknaf Police Station alleging that Yaba, Gaza and government work were used to cover up Sinha's death.
The plaintiff in the case, Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous, came out of the court and said that on the instructions of OC Pradeep Kumar Das, Inspector Liaquat shot and killed my brother in the cold head.
He later said that he tried to disfigure my brother by kicking him in different parts of his body and face. During this time other accused cooperated with them. So he said he is taking refuge in the law.
