Restrictions affect life in India-controlled Kashmir June 13, 2010

Authorities have imposed severe restrictions Sunday in old parts of Srinagar city, the summer capital of India-controlled Kashmir for the second-consecutive day to subdue the protests following the killing of an 18-year-old boy, officials and locals said.

Hundreds of Indian policemen and Central reserve Police Force ( CRPF) paramilitary troopers were deployed on the roads of the city since Sunday morning, forcing people to remain inside their houses.

"There are severe restrictions in the city. The Police and paramilitary troopers are seen patrolling the areas. They have even laid barricades on the roads to restrict movement of vehicles, " said Ajaz Ahmad, a downtown resident.

The city witnessed clashes Saturday, when 60 people including 15 policemen and seven media professionals sustained injuries.

The clashes erupted following the killing of Tufail Ahmad Matoo of Safakadal locality of city. Locals said he was killed by police Friday evening while chasing protesters. However, police denied the charges and said the boy was murdered.

Officials have conducted a postmortem of Matoo to ascertain the cause of his death. The report is yet to be made public. However, New Delhi-based newspaper The Indian Express quoted region's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah saying he was told that the boy had been hit by a tear gas shell.

The restrictions have affected life in the capital city with businesses and shops closed and movement of vehicular traffic suspended.

"The restrictions have been put in place to maintain law and order in the city," said a police official posted in city.

Meanwhile, all the separatist groups in the region have condemned the killing of youth.
