Republic Day celebrations: US President Barack Obama leaves for India - The Economic Times
By PTI | 24 Jan, 2015, 06.31PM IST

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama today embarked on his highly anticipated three-day landmark trip to India during which the two countries will strive to make progress on climate change, defence and economic cooperation.

Obama left by Air Force One, the presidential aircraft, from the Andrews Air Force Base.

The President is accompanied by a sizeable delegation that will include several top officials, as well as First Lady Michelle Obama. Obama is travelling to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Presidential aircraft will have a brief refuelling halt at Ramstein in Germany and will touch down in Delhi at 10 am on Sunday at Air Force Station, Palam.

The President, who is making his second visit to India, will be joined there by multiple members of his Cabinet, influential business leaders and a host of US lawmakers, including Nancy Pelosi, the minority leader of the US House of Representatives.

On his arrival, Obama will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at about 12 noon at the majestic Rashtrapati Bhawan by President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Thereafter, he will pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at the Rajghat and participate in a tree planting event there.

Obama will then join Modi for a restricted working lunch at the Hyderabad House and participate in a "walk and talk" with the Indian Prime Minister there, the White House said.

The two leaders will then have an expanded delegation level meeting, which is expected to last for about an hour.

Later in the evening, Obama is scheduled to meet US embassy personnel and families at ITC Maurya Hotel. He will then drive down to Rashtrapati Bhawan to attend the state banquet hosted by President Mukherjee.

On January 26, Obama will participate in the Republic Day celebration as the chief guest along with the First Lady. Later, the Obamas will attend a 'At Home' reception hosted by President Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan.

In the afternoon, Obama and Modi will participate in a CEO forum roundtable and make remarks at a US-India Business Summit.

On January 27 morning, the US President will give an address at Siri Fort Auditorium and then leave for Saudi Arabia. He has cancelled his much-publicised visit to Agra to see the Taj Mahal.

Obama will travel to Riyadh in order to pay respects to King Salman bin Abdulaziz and the family of the late King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz.

British PM David Cameron wishes 'partner' India on Republic Day | Zee News
Last Updated: Saturday, January 24, 2015 - 18:46

London: UK Prime Minister David Cameron on Saturday described the Indo-British ties as "a partnership between equals" in his special message to India ahead of the country's 65th Republic Day.

"As millions of people mark this important milestone, we can reflect on the enduring and special relationship between our two nations the world's oldest democracy and its largest," said a statement from his Downing Street office.

"This relationship has gone through great changes. Our collaboration is now stronger, deeper and more far-reaching. It is a partnership between two equals with a mutual respect for each other," the statement said.

The two countries are generating more jobs, more growth and more security for mutual benefit, the British PM said, adding that the "future will only continue to get better for us both".

Beyond the economic relationship, Cameron also hailed the "people-to-people" ties and the "enormous contribution" of the Indo-British community in the UK.

"Whether it is through enterprise, culture, public service or business, British-Indians are at the forefront of our country and make an incredibly positive impact.

"I look forward to a future where the UK-India relationship continues to thrive and we share many more milestones and experiences," Cameron said.

India will celebrate its 65th anniversary of Republic Day on January 26 where US President Barack Obama would be the chief guest.

Obama in India: PM Modi receives US President at airport | Zee News
Last Updated: Sunday, January 25, 2015 - 12:24

New Delhi: In a departure from protocol, Narendra Modi on Sunday received US President Barack Obama at the airport here, becoming the second Indian Prime Minister after Manmohan Singh to extend this special gesture to Obama.

During his last visit to India in November, 2010, Obama and his wife Michelle were received at the airport by Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur.

The sight of both Obama and Modi hugging each other warmly, was reminiscent of a similar bonhomie enjoyed by the US President with Singh. He had hugged the then Prime Minister and greeted Kaur with a peck on her cheeck. Michelle had repeated the gesture to Singh and Kaur.

The Indian Prime Minister receiving the US head of state at airport is a reflection of the importance India attaches to its strategic ties with the global super power.
Singh had also received Obama's predecessor George W Bush at the airport when he had visited India in 2006, just a year after the two leaders inked the landmark Indo-US nuclear deal.

Obama will be the first US President to grace the Republic Day parade as the Chief Guest tomorrow, and the first American President to visit India twice.

He will hold extensive talks with Modi on a number of strategic issues including ways to break the impasse over implementation of the civil nuclear deal and enhancing defence and economic ties.

Both countries are working hard to have "excellent" outcomes from the visit of Obama.

President Obama pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi

New Delhi: US President Barack Obama on Sunday visited Raj Ghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at the final resting place of the Father of the Nation.

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal accompanied President Obama who laid wreath at the memorial. Both Obama and Piyush Goyal paid floral tribute to the Father of the Nation.

President Obama also planted a sapling at Raj Ghat.

Attired in a kurta with a saffron shawl draped on one shoulder, Modi greeted Obama with a spontaneous hug. Of course, this is not the first time an Indian prime minister has broken protocol for an American president. Obama is unique in that in 2010, it was Manmohan Singh and Gursharan Kaur who received Barack Obama and his wife Michelle at the airport by breaking protocol.

In fact, despite being more reserved and quiet, Manmohan Singh was not above taking those personal steps beyond protocol, certainly in foreign policy. In March 2006, Singh received former US president George Bush at the airport as well, a visit that sealed the nuclear deal. For Republic Day in 2006, Manmohan Singh again stood at the airport to welcome Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah who was India's chief guest that year. The late king made the first royal visit to India after 50 years, again a visit that transformed the nature of ties between Saudi Arabia and India.

Yup.

We are happy that state head of the world's strongest nation is visiting our country and also we are expecting Russian President soon .... we have already had the visit of the Chinese premier and for not ignoring the nation because of its internal issues or they found it not worth visiting.

We are happy that we are talking about each others trade, technology exchanges and global issues like climate change and not whining about another country in diplomatic circles and asking for money to do stuff on their behalf.

We are happy that we are talking about defence collaborations and talking about joint efforts in partnerships in the field of defence rather than begging for weapons to fight our wars and internal issues.

We are happy that we are partnering the world's strongest nation on technological co operations and co developing it with world standards rather than complaining about breaking of sovereignty or actions by that state without co operation or negotiating the exchange of a wreck that fall inside our territory or the damage caused by that country's mis adventure which cost lives and structural losses in our territory.

Yes we are happy. We should be , we ought to be ....cause we are not living in a secluded world away from others in this planet and is constantly interacting with world nations for the benefit of our own people and beyond.
