Zia Is Buried Before a Muted and Prayerful Throng - NYTimes.com

Beneath the four white marble minarets of a mosque that looms over this capital, President Mohammad Zia ul-Haq was buried today in a military funeral attended by at least 100,000 Pakistanis.

Diplomats from more than 70 nations, including 30 heads of state, stood in withering heat as the casket was lowered to the sounds of a 21-gun salute that echoed over the valley city. President Zia and 38 others were killed on Wednesday when a Pakistani military plane exploded.

A huge, surging throng of Pakistanis packed roads leading to the burial site, the Faisal Mosque at the foot of the Margalla hills. Thousands more were held back by stick-wielding police at the mosque, a gift from Saudi Arabia that opened only two months ago.

As the gun carriage carrying the flower-bedecked casket left the President's official residence and rolled slowly along the five-mile route to the mosque, the waiting crowds groaned, chanted prayers, wept and shouted, ''Pakistan! Pakistan!'' A Mood of Ambivalence..

I spend most prt of the day in front of the TV that day when General Zia's Funeral was being Broadcasted Live from Islamabad.
One of his Favourit TV anchor / News reader Azhar Lodhi was doing commentery on loud apeakers at the premesis of his burial, and it was an emotional commentary..Eventually he had to be removed from the mic as he was crying too hard for the comfort of the crowd.
More than 30 heads of state from Around the world were there, mostly from Muslim countries and this has never happened before or since for any other Pakistani, not even for the world famous Benazir Bhutto..Her Funeral wasnt attended by any foreign deligate, but general zia's funeral was attended by the whole world.
I remember that the largest foreign Deligation at his funeral was from Turkey , almost every Turkish minister including their President and Prime mnister was there at the Funeral, and Turkish Prime minister was crying with greif as if his own brother had died...literally.
I remember scenes of utter mismanagement.Heads of state not receiving any protocol and many just walking on their own unescortyed to Zia's grave, and then back to their seats under a makeshift tent...

Ever wondered why General Zia was so world popular?

He was a saint and greatest Muslim soldier ever. A true Ghazi. May Pakistan be blessed with many more leader like him.

He was an honest man even his enemies says you can't blame of any Financial corruption and because of his efforts Pakistan go achieved Nuclear Tests capability in 1984 but for political reasons he didn't allowed them to be tested and his funeral overall is said to be attended by at least 1 million people his funeral was the biggest ever in history of Pakistan even many Sufis in Pakistan didn't had this big funeral He was a lion yes you can disagree with his policies but what he thought was good for Islam Pakistan he did

Rot in hell he was the killer of thousands of innocents.
He didn't killed a single one Sir first check before talking

This bastard killed many people and didn't allow any parties to compete against him. Like Musharraf, he became one of the longest sitting President...

Be a nice man now, and tell us which people did Gen Zia kill.
At the end of your statement, do tell us a little some thing about your self.

Rot in hell he was the killer of thousands of innocents.

Only Qadiyanis and crazy liberal westernized confused idiots who suffer from identity crisis hate him. And also PPP supporters hate him.

Patriotic Pakistanis love General Zia :pakistan:

May Allah reward him Jannat-ul-Firdous for leading the Jihad against kuffar soviets.

No Sir he was never an agent he was the one who took advantage of American war in Afghanistan and completed our Nuclear Program and result got killed he was the one who broke the Russians who every common sense man knew would have attacked Pakistan and above all he was not corrupt like Musharraf and he didn't killed any except Bhutto and that moron was the who murdered several political leaders most who attack Zia are former communists and now american slaves and known enemies of Islam in Pakistan

This guy was a murderer and still is a murderer of thousands of pakistanis killed today ..... for zia 100K people came out only in Islamabad every one knows the sarkari non residents , For BB every one in Pakistan came out in every city /corner of Pakistan people protested.

I think, we can’t compare Zia’s era with Musharraf’s as both work in different circumstances altogether.

When Gen Zia was President, both Pakistani and American Geo-political interests are same, It’s easy to work in that environment when not only a Super Power but your Religious zealots too are happy to work side by side against another foe, Musharraf gots a far difficult time at his disposal one must admit.

Zia found a far more supportive print & electronic media compares to Musharraf, there is only one “Sarkari” news channel….people have to believe whatever it presents in whatever way and we did the same….no doubt about it!!

Zia was a good person, but the circumstances (Afghan Jihad) are the greater push for him to portray himself as Religious, otherwise Zia was promoted only by the advice of King Jordan to Bhutto as Zia played a big and crucial part in crushing Palestinian revolt in Jordan back in 1975 during Pak Army’s posting.

These views of mine only develops when i found my maturity……back in mid 80s (in my teenage) I always shout….thunderously….Mard-e-momin….Mard-e-Haq……Zia-ul-Haq…Zia-ul-Haq!!
