Rehman Malik acquitted of corruption, misuse of authority charges

Karachi: Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik has been acquitted of corruption and misuse of authority charges by the Accountability Court.

Allowing the acquittal application during proceedings on Thursday, the court observed that given that no objections were raised by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) deputy prosecutor general as well as the attending circumstances of the case, there was no probability of the applicant being convicted, and hence, he has been acquitted of charges levelled against him.

Malik was accused of exerting his influence as additional director of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in 1995 to favour his brother-in-law’s firm. “This is triumph of justice,” claimed the interior minister soon after the verdict was announced. He alleged that he was politically victimised by former senator and Ehtesab Bureau Chief Saifur Rehman, and criminal proceedings were initiated against him at Rehman’s behest.

to be honest, i praise him for facing this 'hostile' court. others should also follow his path and get their names cleared if they think they are being politically victimised

There are many cases against him and this is just one. I hope that there is enough evidence against him in at least one of these cases.

Well, courts are courts, they are neither hostile nor friendly; remember, the law is blind by default. I am glad that Judiciary is somewhat free but free judiciary can not bring a revolution in our rotten judicial system. The next step, and even more important one, is to have a corruption-free investigative system. You watch, Rehman Malik or any other politician, or civil or military bureaucrat will never get punished by these courts. Why I am saying this? because these are white collar criminals; they have committed crimes, but left no evidence behind. So having a free judiciary is but one step in the right direction, change will only come once the agencies responsible for criminal investigation do their job freely and honestly.

You have to praise him for running around and appearing in different courts in different cities on a daily basis.

Besides his fault advices and close association to Zardari, I have always wondered who would you want to replace him with when you say he should be sent home? This isn't a good time to be the Interior Minister. Don't be hostile when answering this, just suggest somebody.

The next step, and even more important one, is to have a corruption-free investigative system. You watch, Rehman Malik or any other politician, or civil or military bureaucrat will never get punished by these courts. Why I am saying this? because these are white collar criminals

White collar crimes require tracing long paper trails and require educated and intelligent people, not an ASI in Police Station Sarwar Bazar. This has to change with the policing system. Police is indeed the first step towards justice and we need to improve the training and funding of our police far beyond what it is today or has ever been.

However depotic the 2nd govt of NS was and however politically motivated the Ehtesab Commission was, you have to give them due credit for their work if they did it. NAB has been a complete failure, plea bargains to avoid long court cases thus guilty people going back to US to live for free. Ethesab Commission for the first and only time in our history uncovered "foreign" and "Swiss" accounts. Money trails were uncovered in detail for the first and only time. Senator Saif ur Rehman was an evil guy and all his actions were mere acts of political vengeance but his output was visible. NAB relied only on the earlier evidences to accuse BB/AZ. Evidences of corruption against NS were weak because BB's govt's never managed to do the kind of uncovering the Ehtesab Commission did.

I will not praise him for fulfilling his civic duties, ordinary Pakistanis suffer far more. .

sir ji i thought you already know my view on judiciary. i used the word hostile as used in media and often by the govt. nothing to do with me
