If people see the above statistics they think these are the current economic powers right now but in current reality this is wrong. Having much people doesnt say anything about the potential economic power right now but labor force does.

Labor force, total | Data | Table

You see if you look at labor force you realize that india and china are like totally different countries. India has barley more than half of people like China going to work. But both countries have over 1 billion people while in china over 60% go to work making a living, producing stuff for the country the Indians have to raise and feed more children which arent useful at the moment.

China has obviously demographics more similar to aging european and north east asian countries. So once you see indias worforce being something over 50% of the population right now its 39%, you will see they will be able to keep up faster with china but this will take very long because until india has such a big workfroce the younger people have to get older first which will take 1-2 decades.
Same way for for nigeria, pakistan and bangladesh these countries have higher population than russia yet current laborforce is clearly lower.
Indonesia on the other hand has more than 50% people going to work yet its barley richer than india which shows a poor performance on indonesias part as people which is funny because it should replace india in the brics according to some.

GDP per capita, PPP (current international $) | Data | Graph

So i dont get why people compare india and china both countries are totally different at the moment.

Great intelligent analysis, I believe this is the same phenomenon referred to commonly as the 'demographic dividend'. It's going to be an interesting few decades in the world of geopolitics to see how this is managed at both ends.

Tell us something new that we dont know...Everyone in India is aware of the fact.

Whats wrong with Russia? Negative growth. Such a great country on path to suicide.

A huge chunk of the Indian population is illiterate。

And you think these people are aware of the above so-called fact?

Stop deluding yourself。:laughcry:

27% are illiterate , 73% literate. So which one you call "huge chunk" ??

Population need to be strictly controlled in India. One main reason why income and revenues are unevenly spread is large families.

The fact is you guys cant see another country in the race...We are a great danger even if we are number 2 and you cant digest that fact.

Second fact is you are delluding yourself when you say that huge chunk of India is ILLITERATE....what a nonsense...

27% is a huge chunk actually. And a majority of the rest are also literate, not too educated.

Doesnt matter, we will get there. Rome want built in one day.

Population is the reason why India has such a high GDP ppp. If anything this is the one thing Indians have mastered. More will only lead to more progress.

Also women don't tend to work in India. In China they do.

I just watched the whole series on Dalits in Youtube. That was heartbreaking. I couldn't hold tear the whole time when I saw little girls had to wash toilets in school and they don't eat with other kids because they will pollute them. Those people will hold back India's developments if they are not put on equal footing both "socially" and "psychologically." The series also covered how local people still have this discriminatory attitudes even though the government has long abolished cast system, how some higher cast are upset about reservation systems. Every citizen is asset and should be properly educated.

are you kidding me? over a quarter of the population is ILLITERATE and you dont think that a huge chunk? see that's a prime reason india is behind, im hoping indian leaders dont think like you, but it would be very good for china if they do.

population dividends only happen if you have a capable work force and a government able to put those people to work. case in point, china was very quick to educate its population and the government created very good infrastructure and rolled out the red carpet for foriegn investors(once the market opened in the 80s), the foreign investors saw a very educated but very cheap work force along with world class infrastructure and jumped at the chance, why? because its cuts down on costs, educated peoples are easily employable in a variety of jobs, china has many such peoples willing to work for low wages and world class infrastructure means efficient transportation and no delays in shipment etc. nowhere else do you find this kind of a good deal for them. what im saying is india need better education and better infrastructure and the investors will come which will bring development and economic growth

otoh,
a vast illiterate population
or an educated one but government is unable to provide jobs for
or worst yet a combination of the 2
would only lead to unrest and potential revolution(see the middle east with its extremely high unemployment among the educated youth)

The backward states in India are improving at a fast rate.... look up the overall literacy rates of 2001 and those of 2011.
