Rare public joy sweeps Kabul after World Cup win over Pakistan

KABUL: Fireworks and celebratory gunfire raked Kabul’s skies as Afghans celebrated their stunning eight-wicket cricket World Cup defeat of Pakistan, a rare burst of public jubilation since the Taliban takeover.

Hundreds of fans swarmed the streets of the capital late Monday, joining a morass of honking car traffic which wardens struggled to tame.

Ecstatic passengers hung off car doors as pedestrians danced and played music despite an effective ban on song and dance dictated by the Taliban government.

“Afghanistan has been through so much recently, such moments are always special and must be celebrated properly,” said Kabul resident Sharifullah, who goes by one name.

“It feels like we have won the World Cup,” the 25-year-old told AFP. “Sport always brings unity among the people. Today we are celebrating the victory as a nation.”

A superb batting and bowling display saw Afghanistan record their highest chase in ODI cricket, with a successful pursuit of a 283-run target set by Pakistan.

It was their first ever victory over Pakistan in eight ODIs, and came just a week after their shock victory over defending champions England.

Afghans have been glued to screens of all sizes in recent days – from mobile phones, to restaurant TVs and a small number of big screens broadcasting in public parks.

‘Today was the day’

Opening batsmen Ibrahim Zadran, with 87, was awarded player of the match and dedicated the win to “people who are sent from Pakistan back home to Afghanistan”.

Although records show cricket being played in Afghanistan more than a century ago, most of the country’s top players learned the game in refugee camps in Pakistan.

“We had never witnessed such an amazing performance,” said 23-year-old Taliban government employee Noor Ahmad.

“Tonight Afghanistan’s people are enjoying it, and Pakistan’s people are crying.

“We want to celebrate all night. We are going to live and enjoy the moment till morning,” he said.

Afghanistan’s win was hailed by the Taliban government.

“We congratulate the national cricket team, cricket board, and all Afghans on this victory,” said Maulawi Abdul Kabir, political deputy of the prime minister’s office.

“This competition showed that Afghan youths are capable in any field and can win. We wish them more success.”

Many members of the Afghan women’s cricket team fled the nation as the Taliban swept back to power.

This month players who settled in Australia told AFP they had been threatened for taking part in activities which brought “dishonour” to their faith, country or families.

There is still debate over whether Afghanistan should lose its International Cricket Council membership for cutting women out of the game, a move which would effectively ban their men from playing international matches.

But for 30-year-old Hamidullah, Monday night’s win offered an uncomplicated moment of joy.

“We thank our national team from the bottom of our heart for this victory,” he said. “We waited forever to win against Pakistan, and finally, today was the day.”

Bayghairat Babar and his parchi friends need to be thrown out of the team. Yes, babar is good player but against weaker teams. Comparing him to Great Kholi is a matter of utter disrespect to Kholi.

That Parchi Imam, that ugly Hassan Ali they all need to be sent packing with the likes to Zamam, Shadab, and Nawaz.

I have been hearing this since the early days of childhood. "Saleem Malik, Ejaz Ahmad, Inzamam" Should be thrown out
"Yousaf Younis Hafeez Malik Afridi" should be thrown out "Misbah Kamran Umer Ahmed Shehzad" Should be thrown out.
Such is the state pf our team since the time i am watching cricket. Glimpse of greatness then back to average again.
2003 and 2007 we were knocked out from qualifiers 😂. With the legends playing in the team like Saeed Anwar, Waqar Younis, Abdul Razzaq, Inzamam, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousaf.
Pakistab team as a whole is total flop in Big tournaments, Too much politics going on, No planning. Its been like this. They cannot play under pressure since early 2000s. Always win in bilateral or trilateral series.
Whole world is playing modern fast cricket, Our Management is persistent on 2 decades old approach to ODIs. Our cricket is like our PIA. 😂

Pakistan has no depth in batting and the bowling is below par. You will end up bottom 4 with this kind of performance.

Congratulations to Afghanistan🇦🇫.

Bring a new captain, retain Babar, Afridi, and Rizwan, and replace the rest of the folks from your under-19 or someone who has some future. You need to separate players who are T-20 mindset from Test and One day team. The best example is Haris Rauf. He is quick but has the attitude of a T-20 bowler.

Mash'Allah, congrats to Afghanistan. lol.

But there is no need to make a big fuss over the cricket world cup.

Since the Taliban are incapable of, Pakistan should ban cricket and break the colonial shackles.

Congratulations to the brotherly Afghan nation. An impressive achievement hopefully a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

Well Said.

Rauf should indeed play league matches to learn the art of longer format of the game. However, I believe that a little change in the batting order can produce better results. In my opinion, Rizwan should open the innings with Abdullah Shafique (or Fakhar; but with license to go after the ball and not hold back) and they should make the most they can of the first 10 overs and fielding restrictions. Babar comes 1 down, Chacha comes 2 down, Saud comes 3 down, Salman Agha 4 down.

I would also like to see Wasim Jr. coming in for Rauf. Ideally, I would like to see Abrar or Usman Qadir as dedicated spinners but they are not a part of the WC squad. Shaheen retains his place and Hassan remains until Naseem Shah becomes available. Also, Ehsanullah and Husnain should also eventually be a part of the bench strength.

You beat me to it. In Hindi, it's called, "Tune mere mooh ki baat chheen lii." New venue. Old story.
