The dominance of Western cities is being challenged by up-and-coming centers in Brazil, Russia, India and China, according to a new study.

The Knight Frank Global Cities Survey, published by Citi Private Bank, monitors “city-level power shifts” by assessing global markets for investment opportunities and influence on business leaders worldwide.

This year’s survey, the fourth, shows major movement in the study’s “Economic Activity” category, with 14 cities slipping down the rankings and 16 rising up.

Author Liam Bailey writes:

The ongoing West-to-East shift in economic might is highlighted by the fact that eight of the 13 jumps in this area were by Asian cities, led by Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur. But the West is not without its successes. Munich’s rise in this category points to the new confidence in Germany – its star has been rising strongly during the Euro crisis.

In the “Political Power” category, North America dominates, with San Francisco and Toronto leading the charge (but a strong showing from Singapore nonetheless). Meanwhile, ”Quality of Life” boosts in Sydney, Zurich and even London demonstrate positive infrastructure investment.

But most interesting is the survey’s “Knowledge and Influence” ranking, with significant volatility. Bailey writes that it may be “an indication of the level of competition between cities that are seeking to exert power through investment in knowledge industries,” including Boston, Munich, Milan, Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro. (New York and London remain tops, however.)

Paris global #1 and London #5 in quality of life? Un- f#$@ing - believable!! :woot:

Chunks of Paris are sh!thole no-go zones.

3/5 of London is 3rd world "Afganistan + Mumbai + Nigeria" in every sense.

And Zürich is #6 ? It's like a no-man land, so quiet that you stay there for no more than a year and you wanna kill yourself.

Where are München, Barcelona, Sydney, Amsterdam, Milano, Vienna? Even SF is way better.

Sad to see no chinese city among the the top ten in quality of life

i've been to paris lots lots time`(2-3 times every year) and i think its overrated``amsterdam is way much better..
chinese cities need to deal with pollution first in order to catch up, but those political freedom and censorships are irrelevant to me`

the difference btw london and a'dam is that you gotta to be a millionaire in order to live in london (then you'll be only so so, not great for sure ) otherwise if you are a working class in london then you'll be priced out of the housing market to live inside literally a 3rd world country - it's the not case in A'dam and probably 2 dozens other major cities in the EU. The only "drawback" of A'dam is probably more "racist" (very subtle) against dark-skinned people if you live in its upper-middle or upper societies - Germanic people in their own backyard, you just can't really blame them.

thats true, in london within zone 3 if u want to rent a decent one bed flat it ll easily cost u £1,500 p/m without bills not to mention the stupid council tax`nice places like west-end without £50K++ annual income dont even think about renting a fat there```so most people who live in west-end are bankers or IT crowds (senior)... students and young graduates are 'outcasted'``!

in shanghai or beijing it would cost u £1,000 to rent a central location decent flat but at least 3 times bigger than those u can get in london`

.
Wow, Beijing is higher than Shanghai and Hong Kong?

That is quite impressive...

.
I dunno the price there but China needs to improve a lot of its air pollution prob and political freedom to be qualified.

. .
Hong kong and Singapore are just too darn hot, all the time.

Interesting that the top 10 cities economics-wise are split half and half by Northeast Asian tribes and Germanic tribes.

It's Northeast Asians V. Germanic Europeans allover again.

That is true.

There is air conditioning everywhere though.

In the summer months you can go out, and be in an air conditioned environment pretty much constantly.
