The German Navy will receive 600 RAM Block 2B missiles. The order for the manufacture of the missiles was awarded on Thursday, the manufacture is carried out by RAM-System GMBH (RAMSYS), whose parent companies are Diehl Defense and MBDA Germany, and the US company Raytheon Missile & Defense. RAMSYS announced this. Compared to its predecessor, RAM Block 2, RAM Block 2B has a newly developed infrared seeker, a more powerful radar seeker and a "missile to missile link", according to RAMSYS. The new missiles are fired via the MK-49 launch systems that have already been introduced. However, software adjustments are necessary so that the new missile is recognized by the system. In September, the budget committee of the Bundestag released budget funds of 560.9 million euros for the procurement of the 600 missiles, ESuT reported. These are to be delivered to the German Navy between 2024 and 2029. RAMSYS states that Diehl Defense will produce the infrared seeker, the guidance unit and the launch canister, as well as integrate the front section of the missile. According to the information, the work shares of MBDA Germany include the production of the radar seeker, the control unit and the warhead. In addition, MBDA Germany is responsible for the overall integration of the German RAM Block 2B LFK. According to the US Department of Defense, 40 percent of production takes place in the USA and 60 percent in Germany. The RAM system (Rolling Airframe Missile) is a ship defense system against incoming guided missiles and aircraft. The German-American project has its roots in 1976. The German Navy uses the system on the K130 corvettes and on all frigates.
