The scions of ruling political families in India and Egypt -- Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Egyptian President's son Gamal Mubarak -- met today and had some serious talk over how to enhance bilateral cooperation.

The two leaders also reviewed the situation in the Middle East and South Asia.

39-year-old AICC general secretary Rahul, on a visit to Egypt also deliberated on issues of social development and programmes for alleviating poverty.

Gamal (46), who is widely tipped to succeed his father, is the Assistant Secretary General and Policies Secretary in the Egyptian National Democratic Party (NDP).

Ways to enhance Indo-Egyptian ties and mitigating the fallout of the global economic crisis, especially in developing states, came up during the meeting that was also attended by Finance Minister Youssif Boutros Ghali, sources said.

The two leaders discussed programmes on realising social development and combating poverty, as well as efforts being exerted in education and on human development scores in the two countries.

They also reviewed the situation in the Middle East and South Asia and deliberated on ways to achieve peace and stability in the two regions.

Rahul is visiting Egypt at the invitation of the NDP, which held its annual conference from October 31 to November 2.

Rahul also met Arab League chief Amr Musa yesterday and discussed the current political situation in the Middle East and South Asia, including Indo-Pak ties.

The two leaders discussed the recent developments and peace talks in Palestine and Israel, Obama administration's stand on the issue and the two-state solution, a statement issued by the Arab League said.

The Congress MP briefed Musa on the Indian expertise in realising development, combating poverty, spreading education and improving health services, it said.

During an interaction with students of the prestigious Cairo University earlier, Rahul pressed for enhancing of relations between the two nations in the field of education and student exchange programmes.

He urged global communities to combat terrorism, as it poses a major threat to both national and international security.

Rahul also visited Luxor, a prominent tourist centre, 700 km from the capital Cairo.

Hi,

10 years from now or maybe less---they will be meeting Bilawal Zardari Bhutto.

^^^ :D

We do manage to create our own dynasties do we not? Funny how it works. North Korea, India, Pakistan, Syria, and now I'm reading about Egypt. Heck even the US occasionally, but in a somewhat diluted form.

I think only European democracies have managed to get away from this, as have (now that I think of it) USSR, now Russia, and some East European communist countries.

I wonder how historians will deal with nomenclature, 500 years on (not counting Mahatma Gandhi)?

Gandhi I (Indira)

Gandhi the crown prince (Sanjay)

Gandhi II (Rajiv)

Gandhi, the Regent (Sonia)

Gandhi III (Rahul)?

More to the point I wonder what these guys discuss when they meet?

Yo Gamal, wassusssssppppppppp?

Yo, Rahul, wassssuuuuuuuuuuppppp? Wassuppppppp?

Let's talk, like, matters of state, dude!

You forgot to add Gandhi 1/2 ... (Nehru)

I personally believe that Congress creating these dynasties is a joke but the gullible Congress masses demand it so it will be. :coffee:

According to congress insiders, Priyanka has more of the Indira-Rajiv trait than Rahul. Rahul is just a face , the final arrangement will be Priyanka calling the shots with Rahul doing the bidding -- just like the current Sonia-Manmohan equation.

While Sonia Gandhi does have more power and influence then Dr. Manmohan Singh, there is no evidence to suggest that his decisions made as the PM are anything but his decisions. Sonia Gandhi's understanding of management especially at a national level is a fraction of Dr. Singh's and she has always deferred to his judgement. I have never heard or read about his being held in anything but highest esteem by Mrs Gandhi or anyone in the Congress party for that matter. For example with regard to the Indo-US nuke deal, she was in favour of coming to some sort of agreement with the Left, while Dr. Singh wanted to carry on in the national interest, come what may even if it means losing power. She(and the Congress party) eventually went along with his judgement.

I would add that not having a song of a former president or PM just for the sake of not having a dynastic leadership is unwise. If this is the only plank to ask for another PM or president its futile and ignorant.

What matters is the person himself and what his record is in public office. If its good then its fine, if bad, then even if he is the son of some great FORMER leader he/she should be kicked out. That's what the masses should understand.

However, in Egypt, the elections are tightly moderated so we don't really nwo how many Egyptians will vote for Gamal. Interesting to see if he will really become the prez or not
