Rahat Fateh Ali Khan detained over undeclared foreign currency

Noted Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was detained at the IGI airport in New Delhi this evening by revenueintelligence sleuths for allegedly carrying a huge amount of undeclared foreign currency.

Khan, popular Bollywood playback singer, arrived here on a flight from Karachi and was intercepted by personnel from directorate of revenue intelligence acting on some prior information, official sources said.

They said the singer was carrying a huge amount of foreign currency which he did not declare to the immigration authorities. Two other persons accompanying him have also been detained, the sources said.

Khan is being questioned and the amount of the money is being ascertained, they said.

The 37-year-old, nephew of Pakistani singing legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, was earlier too involved in a controversy when organisers of a concert in Gurgaon filed a police complaint against him in July last year for his failure to turn up for a show.

Khan has several hit numbers to his credit and had won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer this year for Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji from the movie Ishqiya.

Every Country has Customs Regulations that govern the amount of currency, alcohol, tobacco, dutiable items, non-dutiable items including personal effects that can be brought into the country by a Citizen or Visitor/Tourist respectively. These regulations are promulgated and published; of course ignorance of the same is no defence.

Similar Regulations are found across the globe; whether the country is Namibia, Mongolia, Pakistan, China or USA among others. Only exact details may vary. If you breach the rules, you are liable to punitive action. Speaking from my personal experiences even Pakistan has such currency regulations which justifiably are sought to be strictly enforced.

For example, there was the instance of a Pakistani cricketer who was found in possession of some prohibited substance on entry to the UAE some years ago. Justifiably he faced some action. Nobody can claim any exemption, regardless of one's status.

What have Americans, Congolese or Martians got to do with such an incident?
And of course he is Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, not Raymond Davis.
