What's new

Rafale or F-18 will be Interim, TEDBF is Future, Mig-29k to be Retired : Navy

. .
DRDO is just fantastic in pictures, however DESTO is fantastic even in reality
DESTO has been renamed as Directorate for Technical Development and its not involved in designing aircrafts. But you had to post something.

.
TEDBF will have common platform with ORCA. But instead of LCA situation, where naval LCA was derrived from the Air force version, this will be the other way around where the Airforce version ORCA would be derrived from the Naval TEDBF. HAL learnt it the hard way on navy LCA.

HAL ORCA

Nope, the aim is to be close to rafale. Not a 5th gen, that is AMCA, but technologies would need more time to mature. TEDBF and ORCA are more pragmatic solutions with technologies that are realistically achievable through the LCA program.
That makes more sense, it doesn’t look stealthy at all.

DESTO and DRDO were created with same objectives, there is reason why its contribution to Pak aerospace is limited

and the reason is same reason why there is big difference between SUPARCO and ISRO
DESTO never heard of it?
Defense Science and Technology Organization (DESTO)

That is pretty pathetic given all the investment put into the MiG-29K program. Give it to the Pakistanis, they will fly it for what it is made for....
No way............MIG 29s just too valuable for India

I thought Indians said canards were not stealthy. That along with a vertical tail fin, you sure it’s stealthy? Is india eating it’s own words or just making it up as they go along?
Well either way stealthy or not thing matters they are ahead of us

Aren't most of these Mig-29K less than 10 years old and some only 5 years old? When are they looking to replace them by?
By replacing, I think they mean that from Carrier Based operations they will either be transformed into coastal based squadrons (like based in A&N) or maybe transferred to IAF.

Any details on armament it will carry ?
It's some time away. Let's see it's rollout first.

Question: will it be CAT launch capable? Or just for jump deck?
4 squadrons for jump desk. After that things are fluid. Depends upon requirements.

So the solution is a local Tejas turned Rafale or a stealthy type Rafale?

Which is actually great as a concept but for 60 units seems like a poor investment unless it has common architecture/components with whatever follows the LCA mk2
4 squadrons , so like 80 airframes.

Your Naval MIG-29Ks are different from Airforce's MIG-29UPGs. Also, you Airforce and Navy do not see eye to eye and have rivalry. I bet your Naval Migs will be scrapped.
Upgrades are already being worked upon for Mig29K fleet. Weather it will operate from ACs or not, that's a question. But it will serve its 6000 hours minimum, or around 30 years.

Have cash - will waste. Although handing them amicably to the IAf may be a solution
A&N have 4 airbases. All are being upgraded. A new naval Air base for fighter jets is under construction at Karwar. So lots of possible applications in IN only.

Is this thing supposed to be stealthy?
No.

Doesn't make sense when already working on 2 engine fifth generation amca
Why waste money on another delta wing fourth generation 2 engine jet

This tedbf would eat up resources that could have been used in amca program

India should have gone South Korea kfx way Initially make less stealthy blocks of amca for the roles they are making sperate tedf orca

learn from it and make more stealthier blocks latter

Instead of dumb wishing to make a f22 from start

Tedbf and amca from pics look completely different designs so would share very few parts thus economy of scales won't benefit in production costs
Su30MKI will start going out after 8000 hours. Will need a cheaper alternative than AMCA.

.
By when are they looking to retire the venerable Fulcrum/Baaz ? The K ones are doing fine for now. One would expect the Airforces meagre UPG MLU'd fleet to serve for 15 years or so too.

6,000 hrs - not 8,000 ....

40 years is the plan. So safe to assume 8000 hours.

The Mig29UPG fleet starts to go out from 2032. The last should go out by 2035.

How about a ANCA instead?

Replaced here means not retire but only replaced from carrier operations. They will continue to be used from shore based facilities. IN have hinted they are looking to raise fighter squadrons at A&N islands as well as in few coastal bases in mainland.

Assuming MRFA deal is signed by then 😭

Navy has a very vast and expanding mandate. We are in the midst of already doing joint EEZ patrols of Mauritius & Seychelles and one with Madagascar is in works. There might be a time in future when their airspace patrolling might also fall at the hands of Navy.

Anyways these are long term things.

What we can say is that around 26 new fighters will operate from R11 (Vikrant) which will be based in ENC. While 40 or so Mig29K will continue to operate from WNC based out of Goa.

Once TEDBF comes online, the Mig29K will be replaced by TEDBF on Vikramaditya and supplement the airwing of Vikrant. The Mig29K will be used for its whole life. No doubt on it. Just not on the aircraft carriers.

Assuming MRFA deal is signed by then
The Mig29UPG , Jaguar Darin III and Mirage 2000I are in total 9 squadrons which are to be replaced by Tejas MK2.

6 squadrons of MRFA will re equip the retired Mig27 squadrons and to be soon retired non DARIN III Jaguar squadrons.

Tejas MK1A will replace the 4 Bison squadrons.

All are necessary.
