Rabbi and two other Jewish victims are stabbed in anti-Semitic knife attack outside synagogue by 'drunk far right mental patient'
A rabbi and two other Jews were recovering in France today following an anti-Semitic knife attack outside a synagogue by a ‘drunk mental patient with far-right tendencies’.
The unnamed attacker, who was in his early 30s and known to police, launched the ferocious stabbing frenzy in Marseilles, on the Mediterranean coast.
‘It happened around 7.30 on Saturday morning’ said a local police source. ‘The attacker initially went for two people, including the Rabbi, close to the synagogue.

‘Another synagogue worshipper intervened, and he was cut by the knife,’ the source added. ‘He’s in his 50s and was wounded twice in the stomach.
‘The attacker was taken into custody, and found to be extremely drunk. He was a known mental patient with a history of violence.
A judicial source said the man had ‘far-right tendencies’, and was known for targeting people from a ‘religious and ethnic background,’ including Jews and Muslims.
The source said: ‘He was shouting anti-Semitic slogans during the attack, and kept them up once he had been arrested.’
The man was ‘not fit enough’ to be formally charged following the stabbing, and was instead being held in a secure psychiatric hospital.

Marseilles, which has sizeable immigrant communities, has strong links with far-right organisations, including the National Front party.
Its founder, Jean Marie Le Pen, is a convicted racist and anti-Semite, and used to rally in front of vast crowds in the city.
Police ruled out any links with terrorism in Saturday’s attack, saying the man arrested ‘had no links to radical organisations whatsoever.’ The stomach injuries were 'not life threatening', added a spokesman.
