RAB officials get sanctioned by U.S

So, the Quad (or China) does not need Bangladesh, in other words?
Specifically, it is QUAD member India that needs support from BD. But we should not join the present American punishment with QUAD. It has also punished many military officers of Myanmar. Is it because of QUAD?

It is American policy to destabilize countries and start new waves of cold war. When BD has only a strategic location vis-a-vis India and China, America has no direct stake here. America wants BD to be a small partner of QUAD only for this reason.

It is a Cold War situation now and not a direct conflict. Maybe America wants China to weaken by spending more wealth and resources on weapons than spending on the economy that will produce wealth.

I believe a new flash point in the South China Sea where China is extracting oil from those areas that are claimed by countries like Vietnam, Phillipines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Taiwan. Please see the photograph below showing how China is fortifying a small island.

"The Philippine Daily Inquirer said the surveillance photographs – passed to its reporters by an unnamed source – were mostly taken between June and December last year and showed Chinese construction activities across the disputed Spratly archipelago between the Philippines and Vietnam".

"Brunei, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam have overlapping claims in the region".

The area is very near Japan and South Korea- the two American allies.

It is because of China. Myanmar is the direct entrance to the bay of bengal for China.

Ei sadharon kotha bujhte ki Masud Rana hoite hoy kina amar jana nai!

Could this be the start of u.s blackmailing Bangladesh 🇧🇩, to steer clear of China? RAB has been supporting bal and partially suppressing even worse opposition candidates in bdeshi sphere. Could this be u.s way of cutting a deal with bnp to help the party come to power? In return they ditch China and flush the country down the toilet?

Talk about what RAB has been doing and do not bring China here. You are trying to move the focus from RAB to China. Do you think BD people cannot see the reality?

The USA also reprimanded many Myanmar officials. Why? Is it because of China? What a stupid Chetona logic you guys have? Rectify RAB and try those who are responsible for the disappearance of 421 victims in BD.

The legality of whether these belong to any country is debatable, but that they ARE closer to China maritime zone in the SCS. China does have a right to defend their own maritime zone, as the SCS is China's backyard essentially. If China started patrolling 50 miles off shore from either Hawaii or Okinawa, what would the Japanese and the Americans do?

Countries can make claims as they see fit, but only the US and China re superpowers at this time in concrete terms....and like it or not, might is right. Did not want to hijack current topic, but answering your question. I will cease and desist from commenting further.

Momen: Efforts on to change Washington’s decision on sanctions

RAB

Dubbed as an elite police unit, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is composed of members of the police, armed forces, and border guards, seconded to it from their respective units Mahmud Hossain Opu/Dhaka Tribune

RAB is by and large free from corruption and people have confidence in it, says Dr AK Abdul Momen.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Tuesday said the government’s efforts and discussions with the United States will continue so that it changes its decision on designated sanctions imposed on some present and former officials of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

“It’s not like that all the decisions of the US are correct. There’re many examples. We’ll discuss the issue with them. We expect they’ll change their position. Our efforts will continue on that front,” he said while responding to a question at a virtual media briefing.

The foreign minister briefed the media on the upcoming state visit of Indian President Ram Nath Kovind to Bangladesh from December 15 to December 17, which is a “reflection of the high priority” that both countries attach to their bilateral relationship.

Terming Dhaka-Washington relations “very sweet” with continuous discussions on many issues, the foreign minister, who got connected from Turkey, said the government believes that there will be no impact on the relations between the two countries.

He described the US decision as “regrettable” and mentioned that by and large RAB is free from corruption and people have confidence in them.

Earlier, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller was summoned by Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen on Saturday to convey Dhaka’s “discontent” with the designated sanctions imposed by the US departments of treasury and of state on some of the present and former officials of RAB.

Foreign Secretary Momen expressed Bangladesh’s disappointment, saying that the decision was taken "unilaterally" by the US Administration without any prior consultation with the government of Bangladesh.

He flagged that the issues that were cited for imposing the designated sanctions remain under active discussions, including under the framework of the regular institutional dialogues between the two sides, and that yet the US decision came without any prior intimation.

The foreign secretary regretted that the US decided to undermine an agency of the government that has been on the forefront of combating terrorism, drug trafficking and other heinous transnational crimes that have been considered to be shared priorities with successive US administrations.

Ambassador Miller took note of the concerns raised by Bangladesh, and assured Dhaka of conveying the same to his Capital, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He concurred that the excellent multifaceted relations between two countries could be further deepened through established consultation mechanisms and high-level visits.

Ambassador Miller further expressed the willingness of the US government to remain closely engaged with the Bangladesh government in the coming days on the issues of mutual interests.

@ghost250 ভাই!

Well, I am not any legal advisor for the Phillipines nor are you for China. I was just making a point that this SCS could be a flashpoint in the very near future.

I am not here to defend the ASEAN countries or China. However, whatever is the issue on the boundary, it must be solved in the Hague. This is what was done for BD, India, and MM. Please read the feature below. Hague denied supporting the Chinese claims in the SCS in 2019. So, what China is doing now is illegal.

Yes, America is now even poorer than BD. It needs to sell its weapons to BD to survive economically.

So, America is waiting for BD to buy its military goods before it can lift the RAB prohibition.

Not a bad imagination!!!

Anthony Blinken and AK Abdul Momen
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen spoke by telephone with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken amid Dhaka's dissatisfaction with the US sanctions against the RAB and its seven former and current officials.

Bangladesh Ambassador to US M Shahidul Islam said the two spoke on the telephone on Wednesday evening.
However, the content of their discussion was not immediately known.

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the US Treasury Department on Friday announced the imposition of sanctions on the assets of 15 individuals and 10 organizations in various countries for alleged "grave human rights violations".

The list includes former RAB director general and current IGP Benazir Ahmed along with former RAB-6 commander in Cox's Bazar Miftah Uddin Ahmed.

Separately, the US State Department has asked for the names of 12 officials from different countries to be added to the US travel ban list.
The names of Bangladesh's Elite Force RAB, its former director general Benazir Ahmed and five other former and current officers are included in that list.

The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry summoned Earl Miller, the US ambassador to Dhaka, in response to the sanctions. He was asked to deliver the message to Washington.

"Foreign Secretary Masood bin Momen has expressed frustration with the US government's unilateral decision without any discussion with the Bangladesh government," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Later, in a virtual press conference on Tuesday, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen told reporters that he would hold talks with the United States to lift the ban. And he was optimistic about success.
