Selam to everyone,

I have some questions on my mind that I would like to ask but I'm afraid that some might feel insulted.
Anyway, that's not my intention. I apologise in advance if anybody should feel I have insulted them or trodden on their toes. It's just...I don't know much about the identities and cultures in India/Pakistan/Bangladesh. To be honest, some things confuse me.

Last year I met a Pakistani and a Bangladeshi guy at the university. Both super nice, they were real friends. There was no problem at all. Last week I met another exchange student from Bangladesh. As the overwhelming majority of Bangladeshis this guy was polite, nice and intelligent. Unfortunately, at the end of our talk I found out, that he is a real Pakistan hater.

I was like: Whuaaat?!

So, I have tons of questions:

How is the relationship between Pakistanis and Bangladeshis today?

Is Bangladesh pro India?

What (with the exception of the language) are the cultural differences between Pakistani and Bangladeshi societies?

Do Pakistani and Indian Muslims see themselves as a part of one nation divided in two countries?

Is Pakistan a "desi" country? Actually, isn't "desi" a racist label?

I would welcome your response. Please excuse my bad command of English.

Everything is different, except the religion.

Do Pakistani and Indian Muslims see themselves as a part of one nation divided in two countries?

Some do, some don't - I think most Pakistanis are in the latter group.

Is Pakistan a "desi" country? Actually, isn't "desi" a racist label?

No. The label mostly applies to people and culture from the Indian peninsula, including Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

I would welcome your response. Please excuse my bad command of English.

Have look at the map. Bangladesh and Pakistan are 1,300 miles apart and on opposite side of the sub continent. Pak is next to Iran/Afghanistan. Bangladesh next to Burma/Myanmar. That should tell you something. Only religion unites them. Differant language, differant ethnic groups, differant culture.

As regards India majority of Pakistan is differant because of differant ethnic groups but minority are same. To get a idea of what each country is you need to look beyond the names and look at the ethnic make up of each country. That will reveal the differances and similarities. The four Punjab, Pashtuns, Sindhi, Baloch and few Kashmiri are the dominant major native groups in Pakistan. Then we also have some Muslim migrants from India and elsewhere.

West Pakistanis did not treat the East Pakistanis well and there was civil war in 1971 and they created Bangladesh. It is like Turk and Kurds in Souther Turkey. I also met Turks and Kurds in Canada. One Kurd called Turks fascists and racists. You defended Pakistanis and I defended Turks but they have theor own point of view.

Desi is not a racist word at all. It literally means national (belonging to the same country). It is the opposite of "Videsi" which means foreign national. All people from South Asia loosely call themselves as "Desi" as they pretty much have same shared history and culture. Desi has nothing to do with religion at all.

With regards to Muslims from Pakistan, India & Bangladesh, the only thing that is common is religion. Culturally, people from one region are different from the other. A Punjabi Hindu would be closer to a Punjabi Muslim than Bengali Hindu Just like a Bengali Muslim would be closer to Bengali Hindu than a Tamil Muslim from south India.

There are many dynamics involved from religion to language to cuisine to overall culture.

In summary, people are closer by region NOT religion.

Bangladesh got their independence from Pakistan so you can understand the sporadic hate. It can be used as a rallying point for bengali nationalism. But there isnt any problem between the peoples of two countries. Younger bangladeshis are very hip anyway. Old fashioned nationalism isnt for them. So they are alright with Pakistan.

Wrong comparison. Kurds and Turks live next to each other and have shared common geographic space for centuries. Whereas Pakistani's and Bangladeshi's are 1,300 miles distant. That is almost the same distance from Turkey to Pakistan. Better comparison would be Turks and Yemani.

The Kurd/Turk in Turkey analogy is akin to Pashtun/Punjabi in Pakistan.

It's not as common as you believe, many stereotypes are used labeling Pakistan as a desi country, however it is considered a street word. Many Pakistanis detest this word. Pakistan is hardly "desi" when it is home to some of the most unique races in the sub-continent.

Well although it takes time for trust to be built, Pakistan and Bangladesh are not hostiles (at least not militarily). It's more or less neutral.

Cuisines, Fashion; almost everything....
Do Pakistani and Indian Muslims see themselves as a part of one nation divided in two countries?

I wouldn't comment on this, as it would turn the thread into a troll-fest.

Is Bangladesh pro India?

No clue, however both nations, (apart from a few problems here and there) do enjoy good relations with each other.

Wasalam
I am Pakistani Muslim who is living in United Kingdom and got chance to met many Indian/Bengali Muslims and never faced any problem getting along well with them and they were even fluent in speaking Urdu. We dont have one Pakistani culture as it is land of people belong to different ethnic groups just like India and we all know religion play huge part to have its influence on culture. If there is difference between Pakistani rajput and Hindu rajput then its because of religion. Many Muslims belong to different culture/ethnicity share many similarities because of having same religion which is a way of life for Muslims. Then there are some similarities with people who share same ethnic groups even if they belong to different religion for example Hindu bengali and Muslim bengali may have few things common because of same culture.

1. We are not pro to anyone.
2. Most of the Bangladeshis don't care much about Both India and Pakistan.
3. The hate you are talking about , depends on topic that you discuss. If you talk about general, we are like minding own business. If you talk about terrorism killing innocent Pakistanis, we really feel sorry. If you talk about how Pakistan treated Bangladeshis upto 1971 war, you will see the hate. So again, depends on what type of topic has been discussed.
4. As for culture: We are slightly similar but mostly different.
like: Indians wear sari, so we do. Pakistanis wear Salwar, so we do. some foods are similar.
language: Indians, Pakistanis speak in hindi/urdu which are almost same. We speak in Bangla.
etc. if you see the wedding system, you will get the idea of mixed hindu-muslim culture (muslims wedding)
5. When it comes to religion, we believes in secularism, highly motivated by nationalism. As you mentioned about deshi word, we actually like it lol
