(Reuters) - Chipmaker Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O) is asking courts in China to ban sales of Apple Inc’s (AAPL.O) latest iPhone models XS and XR after winning a preliminary injunction against older models, the company confirmed on Thursday.

On Monday, a Chinese court had ordered a sales ban of some older Apple iPhone models for violating two patents of Qualcomm, though intellectual property lawyers said enforcement of the ban was likely still a distant threat.

“We plan to use the same patents to file suit against the three new iPhone models,” Jiang Hongyi, a lawyer at Lexfield Law Offices who is representing Qualcomm in its patent suits, told the FT, which first reported the news on Thursday.

= If qualcomm succeeds, which is likely considering the sentiment now in china over the Huawei issue of which Apple is a compeititor which no patents that Huawei needs in its products, Apple is fuked bigtime.

Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment. The technology giant has given no indication that it intends to settle with Qualcomm. The filing shows how important the U.S. company is to the Chinese economy, and vice versa.

The ban would cost Apple millions of dollars a day and affect both the Chinese government and consumers, the company added, noting it has created 5 million jobs in China across the supply chain and third-party software developers.

The Chinese government "may suffer hundreds of thousands of tax losses" from the iPhone ban because of lost taxes from sales of the devices, the company also said, citing estimates of 50 million units sold in the country in 2017.

Apple also warned that the ban would hurt Chinese manufacturers like Foxconn and suppliers.

"Apple and many other companies, consumers, and government will suffer truly irreparable harm," the company said in the filing.

= Those 5 million jobs can always divert to Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Oneplus, Lenovo, ZTE, Coolpad, Meizu, Chuizi, etc.

Time for apple to relocate the tens of thousands of jobs from China to India and Vietnam.
Approx 200000 foxconn employees making apple products.
Win win - China does not want apple , we would happily take the jobs.

.
They stay in china becos they need the chinese market.

Indians n vietnamese r too poor to buy iphones
Agreed. But Chinese commie govt is banning sale of iPhone in China, so makes no sense to stay in China without a market.
China gets its ego massaged against USA and India gets the jobs.

In response to a ruling by the fuzhou intermediate people's court banning the sale of iphones, apple said it respects the fuzhou court and its ruling and will issue an iPhone software update next week to resolve two patents in the case

Apple will not easily give up the Chinese market

the problem with indian is that most indians are either too poor to buy iphones or uneducated slum dogs to produce any industry products.it is neither a good market nor an able industry base to make any compatative things. vitanam is a much better place than india for its improving industry ability and much more able pepole.

I knew the chinese would back down. All this action against apple is just a show for locals.
By the way apple is still selling all its models on its Chinese official site. You can still buy quality phones like iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 and the newer models before u are forced to revert to cheap Chinese phones.
Apple basically told the chinese courts to fo.

Agreed.
Vietnam is better than India.
Hope all the jobs get relocated from China to our brothers in Vietnam.
But China is already surrendering.......

U R right
Vietnam's electronics industry is much higher than India's, and from the perspective of industrial chain, Vietnam is close to the developed areas of China's electronics industry, so Vietnam has an advantage over India.

Xi gave up "made in 2023"after US flex its muscle in Huawei case and US also forces CN to let exile Tibetan to enter Tibet and spread chaos all over Tibet.

CN is doomed. Chaos from Tibet soon will affect Apple factory in CN. Its time for Apple to leave Cn

.
More than 20% of Apple iPhone global sales are in China, a total ban of iPhone in China will have a massive negative effective on the profit figures of Apple and its parts suppliers in US, Japan and South Korea.

China's value added contribution to iPhone is mainly the assembly factory workers wages which are negligible relative to the unit price of iPhone. Economic loss to China would not give any dent at all if Apple's Taiwanese assembly contractor decided to move overseas.

And job loss can easily be off set by re-deploying them in other industries if the Taiwanese assembly contractor decided to move their factories to Vietnam or elsewhere. Workers are in short supply in China despite the huge 1.3 billion population, so the negative effect of job loss is minimal.

On Apple's side, there is no alternative global market to take in the Apple's 20% sale that would be wiped out in China. And Huawei would likely take large share of this 20% sale void left by departure of iPhone in China.

It's 12 % by value. But Chinese are known for selling their kidneys for high quality iphones. They will buy from HK.
I remember PlayStations were banned in China a few years back but Chinese used to buy from grey mkt. Loss of foreign exchange from china but no tax revenue for government.

If Apple is crushed by Huawei, it doesn't need employees in anywhere.

Your thoughts are still at the same level as they were a few years ago. That is why you India is backward.
