Qatar Strikes Deal To Buy Tanks, Artillery from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann

LONDON — Krauss-Maffei Wegmann has secured a 1.89 billion euro ($2.47 billion) deal with Qatar to supply artillery systems and main battle tanks, the German armaments maker announced April 18.

The deal involves delivery of 24 PzH 2000 155mm self-propelled artillery systems and 62 Leopard 2 main battle tanks along with associated training and other support items.

Purchase of the German systems is part of a wider modernization of the 8,500-strong Qatari army which could entail procurement of other equipment.

KMW said in a statement its vehicles would replace outdated artillery and tanks supplied by France and South Africa.

The decision to buy the German company’s equipment will be a setback for rival bidders for the contract, particularly Nexter of France who had offered the second hand Leclerc main battle tanks and other equipment in what is traditionally a market dominated by the French.

The armored vehicle purchases are part of what Defense News reported March 4 is at least a 20 billion euro equipment shopping list spread across Qatar’s army, navy and air force. Fast jets, helicopters, corvettes and missiles are on the procurement list as Qatar modernists its military capabilities in line with moves by the Gulf state to play a greater role in the region and beyond.

Now, we are waiting for the completion of the purchase - with great impatience - of the ‘Leopard 2 A7+’ to KSA.

20billion Euro deal for a Army Navy Air Force of less than 20,000 - interesting

Actually 2B Euro.

 What do we lose let them buy at the end of day they'll be using it on themselves when the ones they sent to rest of the world spreading chaos would come back using it on qataris.
