  • Contract comes as Qatar seeks easing of Saudi-led embargo
  • Decision is latest in string of mixed messages from the U.S.

Qatar will sign a deal to buy as many as 36 F-15 jets from the U.S. as the two countries navigate tensions over President Donald Trump’s backing for a Saudi-led coalition’s move to isolate the country for supporting terrorism.

Qatari Defense Minister Khalid Al-Attiyah and his U.S. counterpart, Jim Mattis, completed the $12 billion agreement on Wednesday in Washington, according to the Pentagon.

The sale “will give Qatar a state of the art capability and increase security cooperation and interoperability between the United States and Qatar,” the Defense Department said in a statement.

Tillerson has since sought to mediate the dispute from Washington, meeting with Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister on Monday. He was scheduled to meet the foreign minister of the U.A.E. -- another member of the Saudi coalition -- for dinner Wednesday night.

“I would characterize the mood and the approach to that as being one that is hopeful, that believes that the worst is behind us,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Tuesday.

U.S. Presence
While Trump appeared to back Saudi Arabia and Tillerson took a more neutral tone, the Defense Department underscored its relations with Qatar, saying the U.S. was grateful to the country for its support of the U.S. presence there.

“We encourage all our partners in the region to work towards common solutions that enable regional security,” Lieutenant Colonel Damien Pickart, a spokesman for U.S. Air Forces Central Command, said in a statement when the crisis began.

Last year, after the State Department approved the jet sale, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency issued a report saying that the proposed sale “enhances the foreign policy and national security of the United State by helping to improve the security of a friendly country and strengthening our strategically important relationship.”

“Qatar is an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Persian Gulf region,” the agency said.

its like US is fuelling the dispute between KSA and Qatar and getting the benefits from them ...

Its so dipressing that we Qatari cannot see that they cannot bank on US as Trump openly support KSA in this conflict ... Same should be the lesson for KSA that whenever it is in interest of US they will leave KSA in middile ... anyways its a stupid decision by Qatar ...

This is the price of protection.. and not finished yet.. Qatar has asked for 72 F-15QA..which means another 36 are to follow.. the total was $21 billion..
Well, the thing is, only the U.S/Western powers can protect Qatar from Arab isolation or intervention and Qatar's ruler knows that, so it's normal Qatar is ready to pay tens of billions to the U.S through military deals(which comes with protection), award $7 billion military deals like Rafale deal to France, invest hundreds of billions of dollars into western countries like U.S/U.K etc this past decade and award oil and gas exploration deals to western countries. This means unlike other poor developing countries, Western powers have a huge stake in Qatar , as such it's difficult for them not to support Qatar or at least be neutral to some extent or at worse not to be hostile towards Qatar like they would have been if it was another country that doesn't have much to offer. :)

On the contrary I believe it's a very wise decision by Qatar.

this is pure extortion on part of US as they are fuelling in the conflict from one hand and from the other hand signing contracts ...

For Qatar its a big embaracement ... I think they should start making new alliances ...

For KSA ... rivelry between you and persians has cost muslims alot more than a foreign invader could have done

wise decision ??? this is extortion money man ... may be good for short term but where is honor in that ??? Trump is openly admitting that he s behind all this ... he is calling qatar support of terrorists for no reason and again you are going back to same country ... It means you are giving them license to bully you everytime they want ...

They could have gone for making other alliances with Russia or China which would have send clear message to US that you are not the only super power now ...

.
Lol Is that what Qatar's ruler personally told you?
Anyway what's the meaning of "for the time being'? :woot:. If anything Qatar is becoming even more and more closer to Western , be it economically, militarily, or even politically. That won't be changing anytime soon, and it has served them well so far. So why change a winning team? :D

My friend, why do you think the mighty US is playing this double game if things were really so easy for the US? Why don't they go for a regime change in Qatar? I'm sure a Saudi puppet would be even more accommodating and not only to the US but also to israel. The US has now changed the tone because they can clearly see what will happen if they put further pressure on Qatar.

Wow, what an organised robbery by US.

.
but why this f15 old junk ??

yeh smokey lena tha ???
Junk and Smokey? Lagta hai aap ney homework nahin kiya hua.

That was a very aggressive take-off and it is old F-15C model. Saudi have signed a deal with the US in which all of its F-15C aircraft will be upgraded to latest standards.

Below is a footage of F-15 SE in take-off:

No smoke even with two engines.

Make no mistake! F-15 series aircraft are absolutely state-of-the-art machines with capabilities beyond the capacity of any MMRCA. Just like other platforms, F-15 platform continues to evolve. F-15 series aircraft are arguably the best after F-22 Raptor in American inventory.

F-15 series and F-22 Raptor jointly represent 'air superiority' package of USAF and will be used to spearhead operations into hostile territory against a powerful opponent. Such thrusts have been simulated and results are promising: https://theaviationist.com/2017/04/...ll-ratio-against-14-red-air-fighters-at-wsep/

silent eagle after all they sold hahaha stupid arabs
That is nonsense.

F-15 Silent Eagle was/is a genuine 5th generation iteration of the series but US pitched F-35 for sales in foreign markets due to huge amount of investment in it (political decision). Israel originally wanted F-15 Silent Eagle.

I refer to you my response here: https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/qata...-u-s-f-15-jets-amid-gulf-crisis.501731/page-2

Is it totally impossible that they might be told to get out as they were told by poor Philippines? I don't remember the year Mike, when was that?

What's the meaning of this so called 'honor'? lol. There's no such thing in geo politics. As far as your interests are met we cares about 'honor'. North Koreans are dying of hunger, famine and living in a large prison/labour camp called 'country' due to their leaders so called "'honor'. Lol. same with some poor developing countries who claim to be fighting for honour while their people live a miserable life and flee their country to claim asylum in the West when they have the slightest opportunity to do so .lol. What matters is simply interests. "honour" is bullshit talk to be honest. It's like say for example Iranians laughing at South Koreans and Japanese saying they don't have honour. Who cares? At the end of the day would you rather live or be a citizen of the former or the latter? That's what matters most at the end of the day. INTERESTS. :)

So who will protect Qatar if they turned hostile to the West and the Arabs?
China/Russia? Really?
I think Qatar's rulers know better about the situation of his country and who to ally with than you and me. Hence his decision. :)

Qatar is the richest country in the world. Anybody will extend hand given the opportunity. Remember kuwait?

China and Russia have more stakes and cooperation with KSA , Egypt and other Gulf states than with Qatar by a wide margin You think they will be ready to go to war or antagonise these countries for small Qatar's sake?lol That's just wishful thinking dude. China is even less likely than Russia to get involved in any of this middle eastern/muslim mess to begin with. When was the last time China fought a war for another country miles away from their region?
Seriously, people here should stop indulging in such wishful thinking. Qatar giving it's current position, I will say their ruler made a very wise move with this decision. It's the best move they could make to bring the U.S even closer to their side by giving them an even larger stake than they already have in the country, hence limiting U.S displeasure towards Qatar or even worse thinking of letting the Arabs deal with Qatar. So considering everything that has already happened, Qatar's situation and location this is the best move they could make . No other country has either the capability or the will/interests in protecting them. :)

Doesn't matter, as you said you can still buy better fighter jets like SU-35 and anti missile defence systems like S-400 from Russia.
How come you never buy Russian weapons? Lol. So why pick on Qatar?

A Pakistani calling the F-15 junk? If so then all your fighter jets are less than junk to be honest. Since the F-15(and the newest ones they will be selling to Qatar and KSA) is one of the most advanced fighter jets on the planet. Very few fighters like Typhoon, Rafale can be compared with the F-15.

The funny thing is Pakistan(just like many countries in the region) will have bought the F-15 or other western fighter jets as well if they were as wealthy as the Saudis/gulf states. The only issue with these countries is that they don't have enough money like the Arabs do. Lol

So I don't get what you are on about.
su 35 alot cheaper and we have david sling and aerrow witch better then s 400 in my opinion
we dont buy from russia because we ger for free and we can do alot of our weapons at home

Exactly, Qatar is the wealthiest county in the world in terms of GDP per capita just ahead of Luxembourg. Plus their people live a very good life with high living standards(havibg been there I can attest to that myself). However do you think they will be where they are today if they were hostile to the West like say N.Korea or Iran?
NOPE. They might even be in a worse situation than these countries, who knows.

Sounds like the very definition of a "protection" racket actually:p:,but really thats what being a vassal state entails doesnt it:agree:.As for iran they made their choice almost 40 years ago when they threw off the yoke of american "friendship" ie vassaldom and they never looked back:dance3:
