KARACHI: Punjab-based lawmakers called for an All Parties Conference (APC) to resolve the water disputes between provinces at the forum of Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (Pildat) during a visit to Karachi on Friday.
Punjab Assembly deputy speaker Sher Ali Gorchani, while speaking to the media after meeting Sindh Assembly speaker Agha Siraj Durrani ,said that the people of Punjab had a longstanding desire to set up Kalabagh Dam, which has grown to be the main bone of contention between the provinces. On the ocassion, Gorchani said that the dam could be built only if Sindh agreed
We are facing severe energy crises and we need alternative options, such as dams, but unfortunately the project of Kalabagh has now become quite controversial, Gorchani said. He regretted that while Punjab Assembly supported the idea, other provincial assemblies had completely gone against it. He added that an APC will be another attempt towards resolving the dispute.
The visiting delegation comprised of 24 MPAs, including opposition leader Mian Mehmood Rashid, who belongs to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Pildat invited the Punjab MPAs to a workshop-setting so as to engage them with their counterparts in Sindh to address inter-provincial issues.
Sindh speaker Durrani said that this kind of event would promote greater inter-provincial understanding and corporation between the provinces. Responding to questions on the ongoing operation in Karachi, Durrani said, The operation is being carried out with the consent of all political parties so there is no need to make hue and cry over it. He further said that the allegations against the Pakistan Peoples Party government were not new. While the government has given a free hand to the police and Rangers, no worker of any political party is being targeted, the operation is only against the criminals, he added.
Durrani expressed concern over the strike call and violence following the arrest of MQM leader Nadeem Hashmi. The government has made its decision, no one will be allowed to set vehicles on fire and ransack public and private properties, he said. We want to establish the writ of the government come what may, he added.
