RAWALPINDI: Punjab government has directed the City District Government (CDGR) Rawalpindi to increase the free medicine budget, for the current fiscal year 2014-15, from Rs30 million to Rs60 million.

The CDGR has decided to increase the budget for free medicine at all the basic health units (BHU), rural health units (RHU) and Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospitals.

The provincial government asked the local governments across the province to ensure 18 essential drugs in all BHUs, RHUs and THQ hospitals by end of this year. It also asked to improve the immunisation campaign for seven main diseases including polio.

The government also asked the health departments to fill all vacant posts of nurses, midwives in gynaecology rooms and wards in all the health facilities during the next fiscal year. Skilled health workers will also be recruited to look after newborn babies and their mothers.

For immunisation campaign, the government will deal aggressively with those districts which have failed to achieve 90 per cent coverage in their respected areas. An Executive District Officer will have to visit all the health units for monitoring and to receive the complaints of local people.

To discuss the implementation of a roadmap for health by Punjab chief minister, District Coordination Officer (DCO) Sajid Zafar Dall held a meeting with Executive District Officer (EDO) Health Dr Zafar Iqbal Gondal on Friday.

During the meeting, EDO health pointed out the budget of free medicine for Rawalpindi District is less as compared with Attock District which is less populated as compared to Rawalpindi. He said that Rs30 million had been allocated for the free medicine and it will be difficult for the health department to achieve the target to ensure the presence of essential drugs in all the health facilities of the district by the end of this year.

Upon this, the DCO directed the finance and planning department to increase the budget of the facility of free medicine to the people and allocated Rs60 million in the new budget which will likely be approved within a few days.

The DCO said that the CDGR will adopt austerity measures to decrease the non-development expenditure for the provision of free medicine facility to the people. He added that the provincial government will also be requested to allocate more funds for health facilities to achieve the targets set by the chief minister.

EDO Health Dr Zafar Iqbal Gondal said that there was a dire need to increase the budget for free medicine in 98 BHUs, 8 RHUs and six THQ hospitals in the district after dengue and other seasonal disease outbreaks.

He said that the essential drugs were sufficiently available in Rawalpindi district but the government wanted to make these drugs available in villages, towns and at the union council level so that the people can get the health care facility at their doorsteps.
