Since its modern foundation by Goebbels, the concept of propaganda has seen many faces and textures. Nation-states and rebellious groups have been using the means of propaganda warfare for military / strategic advancements and interests. The techniques to play with the minds and gain a competitive advantage over the opponents, however, have kept changing with time. In the contemporary era, the means of warfare have been digitalized, namely 5th Generation warfare – a relatively new but effective mechanism to gain psychological ascendancy over the adversary.
In Pakistan’s context, propaganda warfare has been used as a cyber-weapon by the hostile nations to sabotage the environment of peace that prevails in the country and target either the government or the people. Having failed to exploit separatist/rebellious agenda through kinetic/military prong in the shape of TTP, Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) can now be seen as a veritable arm of the TTP in the guise of a political party.
PTM, the brainchild of our enemies was initially launched by Manzoor Pashteen with an initial agenda of fighting for the rights of Pashtuns, however the shift in course from seeking justice for Naqeebullah Mehsud to chanting Anti-Army slogans and running rounds of anti-Army campaigns over the social media unveiled PTM’s real agenda and motives within no time. Since its inception, PTM has restored to the exploitative use of social media to advance its subversion campaign by running an unabated hate speech against state machinery. For that purpose, PTM henchmen have been running derogatory and demeaning hashtags to change the public opinion over the Armed forces. In order to fulfil the hostile objectives and demoralize the efforts of the security forces, a number of forged videos accounts, images and distorted versions of various incidents could be observed proliferating under the anti-army hashtags, hurling a plethora of accusations at the armed forces. Interestingly, the participation under the given anti-army hashtags was only limited to the phoney PTM affiliates, the epitome of yellow journalism, and pseudo activists/liberals like Gul Bukhari, Taha Siddiqui, Jibran Nasir Mohsin Dawar etc, who are well-known for their bigoted and calumnious views regarding Pak Army.
In order to keep the anti-army and ethnic cauldron simmering an anti-Army hashtag #Inquiry4Kharqamarmassacre was initiated by PTM on 11-07-2019. The hashtag was seemingly initiated by a Twitter handle @KhorBibi, which seems to be another sock-puppet of the same charade. The most intriguing fact is that the tweets and content under the hashtag #Inquiry4Kharqamarmassacre only came from a handful of PTM enthusiasts, who kept asking for an inquiry into the Kharqamar incident while deceptively holding Pak Army accountable for the murder of 14 Pashtuns.
It was noted that a few individuals from the anti-state clan like Mohammad Taqi, Malik Achakzai, Bushra Gohar and Ahmad Waqas Guraya also participated in the said trend that was solely instigated to target and malign Pakistan Army. However, the limited noise that the hashtag managed to create in a short span of time with an insignificant number of accounts/participants is a glaring indicator of the fact that it was, yet, another engineered effort to hurt and disrupt the image of Pak Army.
PTM supporters have never missed out on a single chance to bash Pak Army. Leveraging from the Pashtun centric incidents, they have been taking to social media to malign the role of Armed forces as a customary practice now. It is the duty of every responsible Pakistani citizen to debunk and counter the vilification campaigns against the defenders through logical debate and veracity.
