PTI surprised at the distortion of statements being cited to Ehsan Mani and PTI’s position on the cricketing rights
Wednesday, 21 May 2014 09:06
Central Information Secretary PTI, Shireen Mazari, today expressed surprise at the deliberate distortion in the statements being cited and attributed to Ehsan Mani and in the PTI’s position on the cricketing rights to Geo.
To begin with, Mazari informed that Mr Mani has emailed Mr Imran Khan to tell him that Geo/Jang had distorted his statement.
But more to the point PTI’s questioning of the rights of the Sri Lankan cricketing series being given to Geo was based on the following wrongdoings that were committed in the process:
- The COO of the PCB, Subhan Ahmad, was a member of the Committee deciding on who should be given the series’ rights. This man was an employee of PCB reporting directly to the Chairman, who at the time was also an employee of Geo/Jang group. He provided the inside information through leaks to assist Geo in getting the bid. His presence on the Committee was itself a conflict of interest and unethical.
- Geo never paid PCB in advance for these rights as per the agreement and yet they were allowed to air the Sri Lanka-Pakistan matches. Again this was a clear violation of the rules.
- Geo defaulted on its payments after the series and their bank guarantee had to be encashed to recover the dues.
That is why, Mazari stated, PTI has been demanding an inquiry on why the COO of PCB was part of the committee considering giving the cricketing rights? How he gave inside confidential agreement to favour Geo’s bid-making? Why has Geo, as a defaulter, not been blacklisted by PCB?
In addition, on the question of PTV not bidding, that is exactly the point PTI and its Chairman have been making, as Mazari pointed out. She said PTV was forbidden from bidding by the Ministry of Information and the then MD PTV. The Senate Standing Committee on Information, headed by Kamil Ali Agha, had shown its anger at the time and asked the Ministry of Information to fix responsibility as to who prevented PTV from making the bid. The Ministry did nothing then.
PTI also demands that an inquiry be conducted as to why PTV was prevented from bidding and who was responsible for this decision.
