Former world champions Pakistan have pulled out of the World Team Squash Championship to be held in Washington (USA) from December 14-21.

The Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) official told The News that according to them, there were "no realistic chances of Pakistan qualifying to the top ten teams of the world", and therefore, the federation has decided not to send a team for the World Team Championship.

“Senior players are not putting in their best efforts. We have invested heavily in recent times on our seniors but they are not putting up their best efforts. That is why we have decided to pull out of the event. Instead, we would prefer to invest on juniors,” a PSF official stated.

Pakistan finished 17th in the last World Team Championship which was held two years back.

“It is useless to finish out of ten teams. Seniors are not making their best efforts and we are in no mood to throw almost Rs 6 million without any real benefit.”

As many as 23 teams from around the world are competing in the December World Championship.

"Total 32 teams will be in action for the top honours during the mega squash event. Egypt are defending champions and top seeds while England are the seeded second, followed by France, Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Germany, India, Canada, Finland, Switzerland, Malaysia, Scotland, USA, Spain and Wales. Pakistan had won this event for six times starting from 1977, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1993, as last time Pakistan won in 1993 in Karachi and Pakistan’s worst performance was in 2011, when Pakistan finished 21st in Paderborn, Germany."

"When contacted a senior PSF official, he, on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the decision was made in the best interest of squash and country. “As senior players including Farhan Zaman, Tayyab Aslam, Asim Khan, Israr Ahmed, Ammad Fareed and Farhan Mehboob, never wanted to train as per modern day requirements and whenever they were called for the training camp at Mushaf Squash Complex, Islamabad, they simply refused, so the PSF and PAF had to take such a harsh decision."

"The official disclosed that during the last world team championship in France, Pakistani players could have easily reach top 16 and then in top 8, but the players underperformed and lost badly. Around Rs 10 million were spent on their training, tickets, dailies and participation fee and the same amount was expected to be spent in this event."

I think if a player is not serious then they should not be playing, but here it seems its not just 1 player, and I wonder why? this seems to be a failure of the system as well as the players IMO, though my knowledge about the PSF is very limited

.
Invest in new crop. The current generation doesn't have the ability nor skills to represent Pakistan on the world stage.

Also improve the sporting facilties and salaries of the players. Last but not least remove old corrupt crooks from influential positions and restructure the sporting bodies from top to bottom.

Naya Pakistan means restructuring every aspect of Pak society which includes sports.

The PAF runs squash federation, since the 70s. The president of PSF is the Chief of Air Staff. Other than him, the executive committee includes SVP Air Marshal Shahid Akhtar Alvi, Director PNSA Air Commodore (R) Aftab Sadiq Qureshi, Secretary Group Captain Tahir Sultan and squash legends Qamar Zaman and Jahangir Khan

Surely somebody have to take responsibility, when you have the greatest squash player in the world, Jahangir Khan in your committee, you still fail to deliver good set of players, then who is there to blame in this case?

yes failure of system and lack of leadership right from the top

no inspiration or motivation to work hard when anything can be bought or looted. why bother
I hate to rant at the failure of democracy and the stranglehold of two family dynasties but one way or another the rot from the top has its effects to the bottom

.
Jehangir and Jan sher should be brought in to run the federation.

.
Sorry state of Affairs being part time job for these PAF officials no hard work time and dedication thrown into talent management.

But why the heck PAF runs Squash in Pakistan? Is that why squash people loose hope in this game? You need to be an airman to run the federation but why? It should be filled with ex players and senior game professionals..
PakMil leave sports and go where you belong..

PSF crying over 10 mil wasted on players as if this amount was meant for their bhanjas.. disgusting..
