Protests in Indian Kashmir on world rights day
(AFP) – 12 hours ago
SRINAGAR, India — Scores of people held protests on Saturday against alleged human rights abuses in Indian-administered Kashmir and lit candles in a vigil to mark World Human Rights Day.

One of the protests was led by independent lawmaker Sheikh Abdul Rashid outside a small UN office in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir, police and witnesses said.

Rashid and his followers lit candles and torches during the demonstration outside the UN office which houses staff monitoring ceasefire violations along the Line of Control dividing Indian- and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir.

"We demand an end to human rights violations in Kashmir and repeal of tough security laws," Rashid said in his address to the followers.

Police later detained Rashid and some of his supporters, an officer said on condition of anonymity.

Security forces are often accused of human rights violations by residents. But officials say they investigate all claims and even punish the guilty.

A two-decade insurgency by militants who oppose New Delhi's rule in Indian Kashmir has claimed more than 47,000 lives, according to an official count. Human rights groups say the toll is twice as high.

Another vigil was led by prominent separatist Yasin Malik in Srinagar's busy commercial district, where scores of his followers chanted, "We want freedom", and "End human rights violations in Kashmir".

Police swiftly detained Malik and his dozen supporters.

Earlier in the day, activists from the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) also held a noisy protest march in Srinagar, demanding information on the whereabouts of their missing relatives.

APDP says more than 8,000 people are missing in the region, mostly after their alleged arrest by the security forces fighting a waning insurgency in Muslim-majority Kashmir.Officials put the number of missing at between 1,000 and 3,000 and deny the accusations, saying the men crossed into Pakistan for arms training.

In a surprise move in September, Kashmir's State Human Rights Commission submitted a report detailing the existence of 2,730 bodies lying in unmarked graves in northern Kashmir.

Crucially, the report said 574 bodies had been identified as those of local residents -- a finding that directly challenged the long-held official insistence that any unmarked graves could only be those of foreign militants.APDP demands DNA testing to determine the identities of the people buried in these graves.

India loves to say they are the "largest democracy in the world".

However, they promised the Kashmiri people a referendum... and they have proven it to be a LIE, since they refuse to allow the Kashmiris to vote for their own self-determination.

What kind of democracy is that, that doesn't even respect the basic democratic principle of self-determination? :disagree:

China is not a democracy, but India is. How shameful that shining democratic India refuses to honour it's promise to let the Kashmiri people have a referendum, even North Korea does not promise referendums and then fail to live up to it.

Being a Chinese, it's no wonder you don't have the basic idea what democracy is

I can clearly see irony when Indians criticize us about Tibet, when China never even claimed to be a democracy in the first place.

Yet they are sure to boast about their own democracy day in and day out, while denying the Kashmiris the referendum they promised them.

China is not a democracy. What is India's excuse?

By posting trash like this, the Chinese members here ensure that some Indians hit back with similar articles on Tibet and east Turkestan. This brings down the overall standard of meaningful debate on pdf and reduces it to mud slinging.

Certainly it's erupted from both sides tell you the truth kind of sick of seeing these India China thread etc etc on world section.

Territorial Integrity & Sovereignty are the corner-stones of any democracy worth its salt.

But again you being a chinese it would be difficult for you to grasp such advanced concepts.

how can he --- his idea of territorial rights is the S China sea argument... its is laughed out loud everywhere

If you so well informed about stuff happening in China ..how come you do not know more than a million Tibetans and Turkestani Muslims were `liquidated.' from 1950-1975??..then you have the audacity to say Kashmir has the worst human rights record!!

do you have any proof rather than western media saying so?

Clearly shows your frustration. Don't hide your frustration behind Indian failing. We know our shortcoming due to free media. Tragedy is you even don't know what is happening in your country and depends upon Indians post in this forum to know what's happening in your country. Sad.

what happening in my country is better than what happening in your country, that's why the world call today's China China miracle.
