''Campaigners protesting China's annual dog meat festival, which sees thousands of canines butchered and eaten, were forcibly dispersed by unidentified men Monday as they attempted to rally outside a government office.

About 10 animal rights activists unfurled banners outside the Yulin government headquarters, before a group of 20 men came and chased them off.

The city holds an annual festival on the summer solstice devoted to the consumption of dog meat, in defiance of an increasing backlash from animal rights activists.

The campaigners held signs reading "Crack Down on Illegal Dog Meat Trade" and "Punish Illegal Dog Transport", but the banners were quickly torn out of their hands by the unidentified group of men.

The slogans are an attempt to appeal to local government officials to enforce existing laws on health and administrative grounds, as there are no rules banning the consumption of dog meat.

The majority of "meat dogs" in the country are stolen pets and strays, according to an investigation published this month by Hong Kong-based charity Animals Asia, though eating dog is unusual in most parts of China.

Meanwhile, in another part of Yulin, traders openly sold dogs off the back of scooters as hundreds gathered at a market. Many dogs were kept in tightly packed cages.

Activists, who say the festival is cruel, have in the past traveled to the city to hold demonstrations, sometimes buying dogs to save them from the cooking pots.

One animal lover, Yang Xiaoyun, reportedly paid about 7,000 yuan (US$1,100) to save around 100 dogs in the southern city of Yulin on Saturday.''

Shocking.. And worse the torture they put those animals through.. We're quick to condemn fundamentalist Islamic practices.. These inhuman actions should not belong in civilized societies as well

Absolutely agree! The OP is right, it's unusual in most part of China including Shanghai, and most Chinese include myself are against this. Hope Yulin people also ban this ASAP.

Yes and the protests against this are coming from Chinese people themselves.. Every society has sections that hold on to archaic brutal inhuman practices in the name of culture, But wider humanity needs to see to end of those.. From Japanese and Danish customs of massacring Dolphins and Whales to whats happening in Arabic countries and else where.. Humans need to evolve

Well said, in most parts of China like Shanghai, we have pet shops, pet foodstores, 24H pet hospitals, pet daycare centers, pet hotels, even pet playgrounds and pet summer camps! Yulin, stop the killing!

If people kept pigs, cows and chickens as pets there would be protest against their consumption as well.

Dont eat meat - unless you killed the animal yourself. With this rule, most people will go vegetarian.

One city in China and the entire country is held responsible lol

And probably not even the entire city, just a small town within that city among a group of traditional village folks who raise canines not as pets but as a food source like pets or cows.

Have they ? From what i've read and learnt it's Chinese people themselves that are protesting against this barbarism in Yulin

It's more to do with cruelty associated with this as well.. No animal should be tortured for food or otherwise

Dude, if you see the conditions farmed animals grow up and live their lives in, you would call that torture as well.

Look into a cows or pigs eyes and see their intelligence and soul. Its cruel all round to kill them.

Well i'm not condoning that either.. No animal need to be tortured for consumption or otherwise.. Whats worse in this case are most of these dogs were beloved pets of somebody, Snatched, cruelly tortured and killed for no good reason.. For a cultural festival.. Dog meat are not a staple food in China most sane people know it, but it should not stop people trying to stop this nonsensical inhuman practices in the name of culture

Eating meat comes with with a cost.

To me, someone eating dog, cat, pig or cow doesnt really matter. Hopefully people will take time to reflect on the animal they eat and not waste food, especially if an animal died for meat.

I do know that In China, people eat meat much less often than in the west due to cost, style of eating etc.

In my parents time, it was only for rare occasions and festivals for a pig to be slaughtered.

Regarding your post, one would think Switzerland doesn't belong to a civilized society.

Problem isn't Yulin, problem is China allows this thing legally happen. There are a lot of dog restaurants all over China beside these.
You are against it or not, of course that is your individual choice.
