Its only done when you deliberately bring in Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International airport as an yardstick for comparing Dhaka International Airport .
Otherwise the topic does not arise.

A a purposeless thread seeing that West Bengal 's economic developement was never under discussion .

Union Minister of State for Urban Development Sougata Ray on Thursday said the renovated Kolkata airport will be ready by the end of 2011.

“The new Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport will be ready by the end if this year. Besides there will be new air traffic control,” he said.

He was speaking at the two-day conference on ‘Infrastructure: The Global Growth Driver’, organised by Industrial and Engineering Products in association with Bharat Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Ray informed that “a flyover will be built between Park Circus and EM Bypass which will reduce the traffic problems in the city considerably.”

He said in Kolkata, one of the main aims of the government is to cover the entire city by Metro Rail connectivity.

“Dum Dum-Barrackpore, Dum Dum-Barasat, Garia-Rajarhat, Joka-BBD Bag, are the metro inclusions, our idea is to cover whole of Kolkata in Metro network,” he said.

He also said that the Bus Rapid Transit system will be implemented in the city to provide momentum and better connectivity to the bus transport in the city.

“More work will come up after the political uncertainty comes to an end in the coming months,” Ray said.

Ray said the urban population has increased significantly, so is its challenge for the government to develop the infrastructure and provide basic facilities to the citizens.

“Developing world is rapidly becoming urban and hence the areas face enormous challenge to provide basic infrastructure help like water supply, transport, food supply and others to the citizens,” Ray said.

He mentioned that the unregulated and haphazard growth in cities further strain the development which also leads to environmental degradation.

“Some upgradation, waste management, road transport are essential; the current plan targets water supply, drainage, sewage and other facilities to reach 100 % population,” Ray said.

The two day conference commenced in the city on Thursday and will aim at showcasing the best practices from global infrastructures success stories and discuss on implementation of similar strategies in India.

R.V Pandit, CMD, IPFonline Ltd, Hemant Kanoria, CMD, SREI Infrastructure Finance Ltd, were also present at the event.

This is Indian member harpoon has brought the issue of airport. He cast doubt on the proposed 7.2 billion USD airport in Bangladesh saying whether it will be an airport or secret space port that BD is making indicating it is not a real news. That is followed by ranting of some Indian members saying it is just show off and will never come in to reality blah blah blah. Truth is that all the indian members heart was burning as it will be the most expensive airport in south asia even twice as expensive then Delhi airport and 15 times more expensive then Kolkata Airprot. Do not accuse others before seeing your own face in the mirror.

According to your requirements you will have a world class airport , if your traffic density is that great , it will be built. Harpoon just questioned whether the expenditure was justified.

Just give statistics and facts mate , instead of taking potshots.

It will be built on public private partnership and already there are investment proposals from narita of japan and singapore airport. The airport if built will be equipped with the same facilities of Singapore and Dubai airport and in terms of capacity it will be equal to Suvarnabhumi Airport of Bangkok.

No doubt it is a highly ambitious plan. But main reason for the proposed airport is to make Bangladesh a regional hub for air transportation like singapore and dubai. In the mean time to elevate the financial condition of the 21 south east and south western districts. Hope I have provided you with answer for your question.

Kindly share the capacity. Delhi is being developed to handle 100 million passengers a year. How big is Dhaka's? If not that big then I would have to say bad economics.

It would be great if you could provide some legitimate proof of these claims. And I'm sure you can understand the skeptism this news has been met with considering the economic capacity of BG. It seems like overkill and hard to relive BG would. Even need such an airport. Regarding being the most expensive in S.Asia- once all expansion plans are complete at IGI Airport of Delhi ~2020this airport will be by far the largest airport in S.Asia with the highest capacity and costing ~$15 BN USD. As of now IGI airport is the only Airport in the region that can handle an A380.

And tbh it is not all about building an expensive airport, you have to have the infrastructure to go with it. For example IGI airport is connected by 6 lane highways and a dedicated " airport express" line of Delhi Metro.
