Prohibition on RAB, Preparation of filing case in US court
Staff Reporter
23rd February 2022, Wednesday

The government is preparing a case in a US court against the US ban on RAB and its six former and current officials. The government will take a decision in this regard this week.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said this yesterday. Talking to reporters at his office, he said a decision on whether to file a case on the ban would be taken this week. We have talked to three legal entities about this. "We are almost at the final stage of appointing a representative to speak on our behalf or to fight the case," he said. The state minister also said that there was no plan to seek the help of any third country regarding the ban on RAB. He said both legal and diplomatic efforts would continue on the issue.

Responding to a question from reporters, the state minister said that the reply to the letter sent to the United States to provide details about the ban on RAB has been received. However, the US administration has asked for more time to provide details in this regard.

The state minister said that although the ban on RAB had created uneasiness in Bangladesh-US relations, work was being done to prevent its impact on bilateral relations.

Earlier, the United States imposed sanctions on six former and current members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) for alleged human rights abuses. The ban was imposed separately by the US Treasury Department and the State Department on International Human Rights Day.

Former Director General of RAB and current IG Benazir Ahmed, current RAB DG Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, Additional Director General (Operations) Khan Mohammad Azad, former Additional Director General (Operations) Tofail Mostafa Sarwar, former Additional Director General of Police. Jahangir Alam and former Additional Director General (Operations) said. Anwar Latif Khan, former RAB-6 captain Miftah Uddin Ahmed.

Nothing will happen. Like @bluesky bhai said, only some commission will go to Jatir Nati 'Joy' for pursuing this frivolous lawsuit....

The US does not care about these lawsuits.

Act of congress can only change IN CONGRESS with CONGRESS FOLKS agreeing collectively on passing or changing them.

The US is at least outwardly a semblance of a nation of laws.

Our politico-bureaucrats run BD in their way and think the entire world including America learns from BD's non-institutionalized systems where bribery is just Daal-Bhaat.

I hope our big asses do not try to bribe American politicians to get through the sanction issue. Western values/ culture is so different from ours that many of our people cannot grasp even after living in those countries for decades.

However, a lawsuit may be accepted by a court of justice for hearings. But, it cannot probably nullify the sanctions imposed by the Treasury department. A Western country is not like BD where Hasina/ Namrudi decides everything in the country.

America is a country of many laws. The US Treasury Department declared sanctions on RAB and others after holding long deliberations since the Trump time.

The Congressmen accumulated all the proofs and documents before sanctioning. They have documented thousands of pages to protect the GoUS, Treasury Department, and the Foreign Affairs Department from a possible lawsuit.

A wise group of people would have understood the situation and taken proper actions as below to rectify it.

- The 1st may be to discharge all the seven sanctioned guys from their jobs in the government.
- The 2nd may be to open old cross-firings and disappearance files and punish the criminals irrespective of the fact that none of the criminals acted without the standing order of Namrudi Begum or Gen. Taique Siddiqui.
- The 3rd is to make earnest discussion and negotiations with the political oppositions to arrange for a genuinely fair election with the provision of an election-time govt.

Instead, Namrudi is trying to slap America for being courageous to slap sanctions on RAB and others. It will doom BD in the coming months if the UN stops hiring troops from the RAB and Police.
