Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz has been appointed by royal decree as Saudi Arabia’s new defense minister and chief of royal protocol.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the son of King Salman bin Abdulaziz, received his education at Riyadh Schools, where he ranked among the top 10 students upon graduation. He received his bachelor’s degree in law from King Saud University, where he graduated second in his class. The prince also received various training courses during his education.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman held many positions during his professional career of 10 years.
His long history of philanthropic initiatives has also earned him many awards.
Before pursuing a career in public service for the kingdom, Prince Mohammed bin Salman gained international experience in corporate governance and international finance.
He began his political career as a consultant to the Experts Commission under the Saudi Cabinet.
On Dec. 15, 2009, Prince Mohammed bin Salman was appointed special advisor to then Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz, who at the time was governor of Riyadh Province. During this period, Prince Mohammed bin Salman was secretary-general of the Riyadh Competitive Council.
He was also a special advisor to the chairman of the Board for the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman then became Supervisor of Prince Salman, the Crown Prince’s Office.
In March 2013, by royal decree, Prince Mohammed bin Salman was appointed head of the Crown Prince Court with the rank of minister and special advisor to then Prince Salman. On April 25, 2014, he was appointed as a state minister and member of Cabinet.
He is a member of the executive committee for the development of Dari’yya region.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been involved in various charity projects from an early age, influenced by his father’s involvement in the non-profit field.
In 2011, Prince Mohammed bin Salman established the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Foundation, otherwise known as MISK, which enables young Saudis to learn, develop and progress in the fields of business, literature, culture, science and technology, and sociology.
He continues to be involved as chairman of its board.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman has made philanthropic contributions through the various positions he holds in this field.
He is the chairman of the Board of the Prince Salman Youth, established as an initiative to boost the efforts of the kingdom in its care and support of the youth; vice president and head of the executive committee for the Prince Salman Charitable Housing Association, which aims to provide housing for low income families; head of the financial committee for the Holy Quran Association in Riyadh; chairman of Riyadh schools (non-profit schools); honorary chairman of the Saudi Management’s Association; honorary member of the National Association for Drug Prevention; honorary Chairman of the Crafted Hands Association and is a member of the higher board for Charitable Organizations in Riyadh.
His previous positions include being a member of the Board of Trustees for Albir Society in Riyadh region, Board Member of the Bin Baz Foundation and co-founder of the Bin Baz Foundation for Marriage and Family.
Forbes Middle East awarded Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in his capacity as chairman of the Prince Salman Youth Centre, the “Personality of the Year” award, in recognition of his efforts to support the youth and communicate their successes to the world.

Defense Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman has appointed Samir Al-Tabib, hitherto vice president of Saudi Aramco for engineering affairs, as director of the project management office for the ministry’s development.
The appointment comes as part of Prince Mohammed’s efforts to revamp the Defense Ministry by inducting highly qualified and experienced Saudi hands to run its various departments and projects.
Prince Mohammed, who is also chief of the Royal Court, has been working on the ministry’s development for several months on the instruction of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, before his new appointment.
He has conducted a number of studies to develop the ministry and enhance its performance, matching with Saudi Arabia’s international position.
A number of Saudis have welcomed Al-Tabib’s appointment, saying “he is the right person for the right position.”
