Pakistan Army has become a favorite target of scorn and criticism for jokers of all hues; politicians, media and so-called HR groups. It seems that it has become fashionable to humiliate Pakistani army, currently engaged in a fierce battle to combat home-based, foreign-sponsored terrorism in FATA and Balochistan. Whoever has to please Indian leaders and establishment has to criticize the army. If a report of India Today is to be believed, Pakistani Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif was no exception. In a report titled, Pakistani PM Sharif belittles his own army, Sharif told his Indian counterpart, Manmohan Singh that he (Sharif) had less faith in the Pakistan Army than India. According to the report, he made these remarks when he met Prime Minister Singh in New York last month on the sidelines of UN General Assembly.
The newspaper terms it as a “sensational disclosure kept under wraps” and the remark was not in jest but came in the course of an intense discussion between the two premiers during their one-hour meeting on September 29. Sharif's remarks were reported in a 'Record of Discussion' (RoD) made by Indian prime minister's aides and compiled by the Prime Minister's Office to be shared with top government functionaries of the Indian government.
This remark was obviously music to the ears of the Indian PM but his government is really in a state of confusion as to which power center to deal with in order to normalize Indo-Pakistan relations. Sharif’s remark makes it clear that he was helpless as far as relations with India were concerned. Indian establishment believes that the present top-brass of Pakistan Army was hawkish and India-centric and an intelligence report that outgoing General Kayani might assume a new role as NSA on Kashmir and Afghanistan Affairs has given many sleepless nights to Indian Establishment.
Pakistan Army has, more than once, made it clear that their threat perception has undergone a fundamental paradigm shift; army now considers terrorists as a graver threat to national security than India. However, India has different ideas. A bulk of Indian defense assets have been deployed on Indo-Pakistan border though India claims to feel more threatened from China.
Some analysts in Pakistan believe that India has upped the ante in LoC area of disputed Jammu and Kashmir territory in order to distract Pakistan army’s attention from internal threat of TTP terrorists. TTP is believed to be sponsored by RAW, Indian intelligence agency, and India wants to encircle Pakistan both from Eastern and Western borders in line with its strategic plans. Army-bashing through some of Pakistani media elements is rampant and a storm has been raised after a leading channel, critical of army and ISI, was believed to be in league with Indian intelligence.
In this backdrop, it is highly unlikely that a third-term Pakistani premier would make the mistake of delivering an irresponsible remark in front of his Indian counterpart. He has an absolute majority in the parliament and is trying to keep the army under his thumb by delaying nomination of army chief and chairman JCSC.
