Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Israel in June this year, becoming the first Indian prime minister to visit the Jewish nation since its formation in 1948, News 18 reported today. Though the dates have not been finalized, “it is likely to happen in June-July of 2017,” the portal quoted a PTI source as saying.
According to the portal, Indian ambassador to Israel Pavan Kapoor told Ynetnews about Modi’s visit. Israel’s ambassador to India and Sri Lanka Daniel Carmon, in an interview with The Hindu in 2016, had said that 2017 will be a year of “high level” visits.
Ambassador Kapoor also stated that the two countries are working together on various projects in the defense sector, with Israel looking to set up manufacturing units in India under the "Make in India" program.
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin visited India in 2016 and held bilateral discussions with Modi. Israel’s Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel also visited India in 2016 and met the Prime Minister. President Pranab Mukherjee visited Israel in 2015.
The two nations are celebrating 25 years of diplomatic relations this year. Though India recognized Israel in September 1950, full diplomatic relations between the two countries were established only in January 1992.
Israel is a major defense and security partner for India and has historically supported India on the international stage in its fight against terrorism and on Kashmir issue, despite India’s constant failure to support the country against Arab hegemony in the Middle East
