BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan, President Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan, President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan will pay a state visit to China respectively from May 16 to 20, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying announced on Monday.

Not that Afghanistan has committed to joining the BRI, speaking to the central Asian states to get them aligned with BRI projects is probably the key issue to be discussed.

Hopefully Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the central Asian states (minus Turkmenistan) will built a standard gauge railway, to speed up transportation. Central Asia gets to ditch the Russian gauge and Pakistan gets to ditch the colonial era gauge in a new corridor from Khorgos to Karachi.

It’s good for Pakistan that Turkmenistan is staying out of the BRI because no direct land route between China and Iran can be made without either Afghanistan or Pakistan or both. Increasing the need for Pakistan.
