This is all over the press -- Former Secretary Gates' upcoming Book reveals Obama has lost faith in the Afghan war and for him it is all about getting out.

Maybe Obama will finally fulfill his promise and bring the troops home and end the American war in Afghanistan.

Article on New York Times here, excerpts below:

Gates came to the conclusion that Obama "doesn't believe in his own strategy, and doesn't consider the war to be his. For him, it's all about getting out," according to his new memoir, "Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War," to be published next week.

...

The President ordered a surge of 30,000 troops into Afghanistan in 2009, but by 2011 he apparently thought it was a mistake, the book says.

Finally a Yank has realized it was a mistake! Vietnam, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan - all mistakes!

But why do they keep repeating their mistakes? :taz:

they're not repeating "mistakes"
Both leading parties in US have massive amount of shares in defense industries.
This is how they get funded, and a lot of Lawmakers make money.
No war, No money. All these giant industries employ millions of workers directly and indirectly. And if they start shutting down their plants because there is no demand, who do you think gets affected the most?
Politicians of course.
They would lose votes. Its as simple as that.

e.g:

The Air Force stopped ordering C-17s in 2006. Since then, Congress added last-minute appropriations for more planes to keep the plant rolling. Again and again, lawmakers came to the program's rescue, partly because it supports roughly 30,000 supplier jobs in 44 states.

In 2010 lawmakers set aside funding for 10 new planes. That year, then-Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates told Congress he would recommend that President Obama veto legislation that contains money to pay for any additional C-17s.
