Prehistoric, Dinosaur-Era Shark With Insane Teeth Found Swimming Off Coast of Portugal
The rare frilled shark is considered a “living fossil,” as its makeup has remained unchanged for 80 million years. This summer, researchers found one alive and thriving off the coast of Portugal, adding evidence regarding the resilience of this ancient sea creature.

The shark was discovered off the Algarve coast by researchers who were working on a European Union project in the area, the BBC reported. The aim of the project was to "minimize unwanted catches in commercial fishing," but the team unknowingly unearthed one of the rarest and most ancient animals on the planet.

The frilled shark has remained the same, both inside and out, since the time of the dinosaurs, with scientists dating it back to the Cretaceous Period, a time when the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops still roamed the planet. The creature is incredibly simply and unevolved, most likely due to the lack of nutrients found in its deep-sea dwellings, a previous Japanese study on the shark suggested. The examination revealed that its diet is 61 percent cephalopods—the same class that squids and octopus belong to.

This deep sea dweller is usually found between 390 and 4,200 feet below the surface, which is why it’s rarely seen and wasn’t even discovered before the 19th century (despite being around long before humans).

The shark caught this summer measured around five feet in length, but at their longest can be around six-and-a-half feet, IFL Science reported. The Japanese study on these rare sharks showed that they may also have the longest gestation period of any living creature, 42 months.

Its name may sound unfitting for a beast that swims the deep seas, according to Mental Floss, but the frilled shark is named after its gills. Pretty much all other sharks have separate gills, but the frilled shark’s first pair of gills stretch all the way across its throat. In total, the shark has six pairs of gills that have “frilly” edges.

The shark also has a unique mouth shape. Its jaw has more than 300 teeth neatly lined in 25 rows, which, according to professor Margarida Castro of the University of the Algarve, are specifically designed to help it “to trap squid, fish and other sharks in sudden lunges,” The Portugal News reported. It’s lined with spines called dermal denticles, which, combined with the teeth, give the mouth an all around frightening look.

It’s unlikely you will ever come face-to-face with a living frilled shark. But if you do, it’s safe to say: Keep as far away as you can, and whatever you do, try to avoid its ferociously awesome jaw.

Very interesting... funny how evolution skipped this one species entirely.

. . .
That's because there is no such thing as 'Evolution'. It is all Allah's Will and Command.
Like really ??

Why would Allah choose Frilled Shark of all the creatures on the planet to not evolve? Strange.

It's there in the article, i.e it's diet available in that deep environment.

Evolution doesn't just skip a species. The reason why this fish is mostly unchanged is probably that it's perfectly suited for its environment. It is usually the environmental pressures that cause changes in a species over a period of time through the process of natural selection.

The Wisdom of Allah the Almighty cannot be deciphered by mere mortals. Science is all about proposing hypotheses and proving them through repeat experiments. Due to the timescales involved, you can't make any useful statements regarding evolution. It is dishonesty in the name of science. A case of either blind or bigoted leading the gullible.

Just FYI...

Earth is made of around 75% of Ocean... Humans till this day have Explored ONLY 5% of it...

This one is not the first neither the last...

Just think what we are founding NEAR our cost...let alone at the Abyss/DEap sea range (5km to 11km deep) ...
Where no man neither machine, neither radars can ever go with our current Tech advance...

Well we did with, a mini sub ( one-two times) at around 4-5km... and only in one search...we found 10-20 new species never seen by Humans with no equivalent...

So if one time in the future..scientist found a big a** creature ( 2 to 3 times the size of a whale) in the bottom of the ocean...don't besuprised

If science doesn't have an "accurate" answer to evolution, then your theory of 'Allah's will' to deprive a poor 'Frilled shark' of evolution is utter bs. I believe in God but I refuse to believe God would choose out of will, a creature to not evolve. Why...I mean why??

As of now I think the diet theory proposed in this article seems more logical to me than Allah's will theory.

EVERYTHING happens because of Allah's Will. There simply is no escaping it. Even your typing is subject to it. The intention of typing is yours, but it cannot manifest itself until and unless Permission is Granted by Allah the Almighty.

Kindly keep your views of religious beliefs to yourself and stay on topic.

Any further word against Allah will be reported.

Relax , don't get excited.
Comprehension issues it seems... you read it wrong..nothing was against Allah or God as I call it. It's on a proposed theory that was being debated. Anyway..

One thing that comes to mind is if they exist then what do they feast on?
Maybe Rocks in the sea !
I wouldn't be surprised ,He has nice teeth.
Okay maybe whales.
