Situation Update on the Political Protests in Islamabad:- Dr. Qadri raised the ante for Nawaz govt by demanding FIR against PM Nawaz, CM Shahbaz Sharif and other top functionaries of Punjab govt for the Model Town Massacre of 17th June. He derived strength from the decisions of Lahore Sessions Court that had ordered today registration of FIR as demanded by Minhaj ul Quran. (Punjab govt has filed or filing a review in LHC against this decision) Some sources in PMLN claimed that court decision was part of their own strategy to defuse possible tensions on those Model Town murders issue since they knew it was going to be the top demand of Qadri. Other sources argued that this was "Angels" coming to Qadri's help to give him a case to raise the ante.
Whatever the truth may be; this decision- though not very important legally - has definitely raised the political temperatures.
Qadri well honed theatrics and unparalleled oratorical skills helped Imran and PTI to recover from their own blunders of early morning when leadership disappeared leaving their supporters behind on the venue. However Imran and PTI showed sufficient remorse and were able to revive their crowds and spirits - though momentum of the day was definitely with Qadri who is seen to be setting agendas for increasing pressures on the regime. This trend has been so effective that Imran was seen picking up on Qadri's demands eg resignations of CM Shahbaz Sharif.
Strategies of Imran and Qadri will be influenced by the response they get or don't get from PMLN and Nawaz. So far PMLN is giving the impression that they could not care less for these stupid unconstitutional adventurists. PMLN Disinformation brigade is busy spreading around the message that apart from the lonely exception of Ch. Nisar no one favors any dialogue with PTI & PAT and the party wise heads are convinced that with more rain or good sunshine after the rains there will be so much humidity that PTI & PAT crowds will hate themselves for their "summer & monsoon misadventure" under the influence of these pied pipers; and at that opportune moment when crowds will be cursing IK and TUQ and crying for compromise PMLN will think - that too if necessary - to give them some political crumbs. The fact that Amir Jammat - Siraj ul Haq - who everyone expected to be active by now is still not functional or has not been able to head a delegation supports the suspicion that this line of thinking may be dominating. You know how war like PMLN is.
The risk of this 'over-confident' muscular strategy by PM Nawaz team is that Qadri and Imran - not getting response - will be compelled to raise the ante. They can do that by one of the several options: they can march ahead towards the constitution avenue with the goal of sitting opposite the parliament which they claim is the norm in every country across the world (they think govt is using bogey of Red Zone & Diplomatic Enclave only to frighten the diplomats and blackmail the protesters who have no interests in Diplomatic Enclave) or they can orchestrate protests against the CM Punjab across several towns simultaneously- asking for registration of FIR against CM Punjab and his resignation, since according to them he is now an accused murderer of 15 workers in Model Town.
What PMLN pundits have ignored is that Qadri crowds are very comfortable around Aapbara; unlike Blue Area where these rural and small town protesters were culturally uncomfortable and unwelcome in 2013, they have bonded well in the lower middle class locality around Aabpara and they love the restaurants, bakeries, kebab and samosa shops all around and they have no problem sleeping in open verandahs. Funny thing is that they have arrived like an army complete with sleeping kits, torches, water bottles, tooth brushes, male and female guards and several hundred sticks. What about the PTI wallas? they too have found a way; they have become a revolving crowd that has connected itself with the large towns around Pindi and Islamabad. They disappear late in night and start to arrive from Pindi, Murree Road, Khanapur, Bharakoh and Taxilla by afternoon. Today they were much more than yesterday and on Sunday they will be even more. PTI venue gives the appearance of a large Meena Bazar with Trucks and DSNG vans parked inside. Lots of old fashioned phoondi also going on. Women are pretty upset by PTI boys tharak bazi and think that PAT's disciplined cadres are more respectful towards women. Now tents and Plasma screens have started to arrive. So while PMLN wise heads are expecting these midsummer adventurists to disappear soon, they seem to be settling down for a longer show down against what they call is "King Nawaz" (Nawaz Badshah)
If one trusts off the record outbursts of PMLN wallas then Imran & Qadri are getting messages from Angels like Gibrael. Official position is this that Imran and Qadri have been fooled by some junior 'farishtas' in the hierarchy and the real divine powers that matter are strongly aligned with PM Nawaz.
May be these suppositions are true; we have not seen any convincing evidence of divine interventions - however hard Imran and Qadri may be praying to Angels - so far but one must not forget that current political crisis is mostly a creation of the over confidence and strong arm tactics of the PMLN leaderships (pangay bazi) and one is naturally worried when the same 'could not care less' attitude continues. Political solutions are possible; Imran and Qadri demands are 'maximalist' and in case of negotiations PPP, MQM, JI and media will all compel Imran and Qadri to climb down from their demands, but so far PM Nawaz appears unwilling or incapable of creating a meaningful engagement - may be this changes by Sunday evening.
