India Infoline News Service / 14:01 , Dec 19, 2011
Four F117s provide exclusive power for the C-17 Globemaster III the world’s premier heavy airlifter. The F117-PW-100 is the sister engine of Pratt & Whitney’s PW2037 commercial engine powering the Boeing 757.
Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United Technologies Corp., recently received a contract to produce the first four F117-PW-100 engines that will power the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III for the Indian Air Force. The engines will be delivered in second quarter of 2012. Earlier this year, India’s Ministry of Defence signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance with the U.S. government to acquire 10 C-17s. India will take delivery of its first C-17s in early 2013.

“We are delighted the Indian Air Force has selected the C-17 with Pratt & Whitney F117 engines to support its airlift mission,” said Bev Deachin, vice president, Military Programs and Customer Support, Pratt & Whitney. “The F117 is suited for a wide range of operating environments and conditions and it has demonstrated superb performance and reliability from the Antarctic to the deserts of the Middle East. We look forward to helping strengthen India’s aerospace capabilities and humanitarian efforts.”

With its amazing lift capability of 77 ton and flight ceiling 13716 mtr it can even lift an arjun mbt or 3 bmp-2s to locations as high as leh. Not to mention the boost it will give to troop movment and humanitarian efforts.

Sour grapes??

India is a global power, these ac will supplement the IAF's airlift capability to provide humanitarian assistance anywhere in the world as well as giving the ability to lift rapid reaction forces/expeditionary forces globally. Not to mention transporting huge loads anywhere in India or abroad with the ability to land on short and unprepared airstrips.

Who are you to question the IAF's strategic objectives? The IAF is the 4th largest AF in the world which is constantly growing in size and capability, a country like India has such requirements which this ac fills perfectly.

They are meant as a replacement for IAF's IL-76 which are nearing the end of their useful life and maintenance of them is very difficult.

What strategic objectives are these c-17s going to fulfil of IAF?

Not true. It is the cheapest to operate, considering the load it can carry. It can carry as much as two Il-76s, while burning a lot less fuel. Hence they are going to reduce operating costs, not to mention the tactical and strategic flexibility it gives. A mechanised division can appear out of nowhere, where the enemy least expects it. Routine air maintainance can be carried out for high altitude posts.

Why do I feel that @FireFighter was looking for some genuine information

Ontopic:

So any news about how many planes they can deliver in 1 year or a deadline for the delivery of IAF's order.
