Power cheaper in Pakistan than India: Riaz ul Haq sb

At second rank, India cheaper to live in than even Pakistan, Nepal: Survey
January 28 2018 09:36 IST

India is ranked second only to South Africa as the cheapest country to live or retire, according to a recent survey of 112 countries.

The survey by GoBankingRates ranked nations on the bases of four key affordability metrics provided by online pricing database Numbeo. The metrics are: Local purchasing power index, rent index, Groceries index, and Consumer price index.

With the second lowest rent index among the 50 cheapest countries (after neighbour Nepal), living in India can be cheaper compared to most of the countries.

India also has some of the lowest prices for consumer goods and groceries, with typical monthly expenses for these priced around $285 for a single person living in Kolkata.

The survey says that India, home to 1.25 billion residents, is the most populous among the 50 cheapest countries. Its major industries include textiles, chemicals and food processing. India also has a relatively high local purchasing power in the major cities that were surveyed.

India's local purchasing power is 20.9 per cent lower, rent is 95.2 per cent cheaper, groceries are 74.4 per cent cheaper, local goods and services are 74.9 per cent cheaper, the survey said.

India is cheaper than countries like Colombia ranked at 13, Pakistan (14), Nepal (28), Bangladesh (40).

The local purchasing power index measures the relative purchasing power of a typical salary in that country, compared to New York City. A lower purchasing power buys fewer goods, while a higher purchasing power buys more.

While the rent index compares typical rental prices in the country to New York City, the groceries index holds a similar comparison for typical grocery prices.

The consumer price index compares costs of local goods and services - including restaurants, groceries, transportation and utilities to New York City.

According to the survey, even among the 50 cheapest countries, rent is at least 70 per cent cheaper than in New York City, groceries are at least 40 per cent cheaper, and consumer goods and services cost less by 30 per cent or more. Local purchasing power does vary greatly among these cheap countries, however.

South Africa has topped the survey as the cheapest country to live or retire. Being the world's largest producer of platinum, gold and chromium, goes far to enrich the country and its economy. This resulted in a local purchasing power that is significantly higher than what New Yorkers face, which is the most favourable factor that helps South Africa top the list.

Along with a higher local purchasing power, South Africa also offers lower prices on consumer goods and groceries, and rent costs that are typical of the 50 cheapest countries. In the major city of Cape Town, for instance, monthly expenses total just under USD 400 while the average rent costs are reflected by the typical price to rent a one-bedroom in Durban of around USD 280 a month.
Among the most expensive countries in the survey are Bermuda (ranked 112), Bahamas (111), Hong Kong (110), Switzerland (109) and Ghana (108).

my point was Pakistan growing middle class, its easier to become middle class in Pakistan for a poor person then in India due to India having the highest amount of people living below the global poverty index.

@Lil Mathew

Matthew anna,

You have a point, but per capita consumption in India is skewed towards the rich- the Ambanis and the Adanis eat up everything-the common man gets little (unlike in Pakistan). Brof sahib has written tonnes of post about that in PDF, chowk, his musings and elsewhere.

Regards
But in almost every social indicators says average Indians lives better than average Pakistani...
High life expectancy, high HDI index, High literacy rate, low infant mortality etc...

.
Power cost wil vary every state

It's is the opportunities available and a man's capability to utilise that opportunity make that man successful... How a man's success depends on the amount of people living around him???

A poor person in Pakistan is worse off than a poor person in India.

.
If Pakistan's exports improve, then it is an indication of lower cost of production. If this does not happen, then it does not matter how cost of electricity fluctuates from one month to another.

.
Petrol and Diesel prices in Pakistan is also lower than India, difference is quite substantial here...

What is petrol & diesel so cheap in Pakistan? Subsidized by the government?

I wasn't talking about an individual being successful anyone can be sucessful, im talking as society India has the highest number of poor people living below the global poverty index so alot harder for all of them to become middle class then a country with lesser amount of people living below the poverty index.

@Pluralist

Thanks. Thats what my dear friend of old, Brof Riazul Haq sb (@RiazHaq) has been saying- that inspite of lower reported pc income, the average Pakistani has a better consumption level and standard of living than the average Bharati.

More than the power rates...if you start with the basics, first thing first like affordable housing, housing for the middle class and lower middle class, Pakistan urban areas like Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Peshawar are doing much better.

In Karachi city for instance with its huge population, you will find dozens of housing societies, towns like Metroville, Taiser Town, North Karachi, Surjani Town, Nazimabad, Jauhar, Malir, Hawkes bay scheme, Scheme 33 which caters to lower middle class to lower lower class people.

This I am not witnessing in Mumbai or even Delhi. Reason you see large expanse of slums and rows of luxurious apartments in Mumbai for instance. Housing, apartments prices in Karachi is also very much affordable compared to Mumbai, and a large population can afford low income housing in Karachi. People have bought houses on 120 sq.yards for as low as 4 lacs Rs. few years ago. Even now the prices are affordable in many areas.

there is no such space to make affordable housing in megacities like delhi and mumabi, that's why satellite cities are being established like Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad around delhi and places like Navi Mumbai and pune which are much more affordable than Mumbai although pune isn't technically a satellite city. You can count Kalyan near Mumbai as such place. Also almost every year DDA makes apartments and draws lots at cheaper rates and also has the option to finance, these apartments are 2, 3 and 4 BHK at prices much lower than what you will normally will have to pay, categories in LIG (low income group), MIG (medium income group) and HIG (High income group). About the slums, govt does relocate people to better houses, all apartments at free of cost but since it takes huge budget to do that with entire colonies, its slow, but recently its picking pace and where colonies cant be relocated they are getting makeover to improve the living conditions.
Thus instead of populating the existing cities that have already been overloaded, we are making new ones.

Right...satellite cities idea is good, taking the pressure off from ever increasing burden on the existing cities infrastructure...comes with some problems too.

Like in going vertical, in apartments and apartments complex construction, an individual customer has to rely on the builder or the developer or for that matter on Govt. to start some sort of low income affordable housing...you cannot start constructing your own single apartment...unlike in government sponsored housing schemes with plots demarcated and with utilities provided for small homes and not apartments.

This has made it much simpler and more affordable say in Karachi for a person with a small family to buy a plot at lower cost from KDA, from the ballot, book the plot with no middle man involved, and start constructing his/her small home on 80, 60 or 120 sq.yards. with the approval done of the basic design from KDA, city government. This is not possible in an apartment complex...

One reason you see so many towns in Karachi with small affordable houses, constructed by the owners themselves, like start with one or two room and complete it when you have the money...not possible in an apartment complex...

You see lots and lots of small houses constructed in Karachi on self help...in many dozen low income areas of the city, planned housing though. Like here below...

Thats your opinion , far from reality. Start following international media and wake up from these delusional dreams . There is a reason that 8000 farmers committed suicide in india last year just because they had no food to eat. India ranked at 122 out of 155 countries in the World Happiness Report 2017, Pakistan was at 80th position. So no sir its in no way better for a poor to be in an india. Having said that the argument that you are projecting itself is crap. Petrol , electricity and Diesel are expensive in india , how is it better for poor in india? Unless you are talking about thousands of slums in india where they dont have electricity and there is no concept of sanitation. Follow some logic , dont be an indian :p
