Dear Forum Members,

In my time on this forum, I have read much about the poverty in India. Although this is a defense forum, it is my sincere belief that as South Asians we must never lose focus on the gravest of issues our countries face today, i.e. poverty.

A considerable number of our citizens spend their time scavenging for food, they literally live from day to day, on the very brink of existence.

I want to start a thread that outlines the challenges we face and all that we've done (doing) to overcome this, most daunting of hurdles.

I would like this thread to be India specific, but I would encourage members from our neighboring states to do the same. Millions of our people a struggling to survive, the least we can do is have a thorough understanding of the root causes of their situation and what, if anything, that can be done to help alleviate their situation.

(Mods, I know this thread is in the wrong section, I didn't know where to put it since I can't put it in the economy section, please move it to the appropriate section, also, consider making it a sticky, poverty isn't going anywhere in a hurry.)

.
This is how I propose to go about things,

1. Determine the root causes of poverty.

2. Understand the magnitude of the problem.

3. Outline the steps taken to eradicate poverty.

4. Outline steps members living at home and abroad can take to help out.

My goal is to learn and motivate myself and others into taking action. There's only so much our government can do, it is our responsibility to contribute all that we can. Community organizations are essential.

I don't know what I can do to help, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, hopefully this thread can be of help to all of us.

. .
Thanks for contributing, I hope many more join in.

I agree, Singh is a great leader, but as citizens we have a responsibility, the ones on the internet even more so.

We must help out in the community and go above and beyond that if possible. We should try and encourage as many people as possible to wake up and do something to help out.

high level education is always the shortest way,no one knows this better than Japan, india is lack of resources, you will get all the answer from their experience

At any given time there will be 20% poverty in INdia and China becasue of the Population.

But what is poverty i still don't understand ? It would be great if someone explains me something about poverty.

.
we can 't blame 20% or even 10% poverty for the population,it's not the excuse for high poverty rate

What is poverty ?

And there will be always be 20% poverty we can't do anything about it. That's sad but true.

if we try to give more poverty with equal education opportunities , the next genaration will easily cut your "destiny" rate.....

actually poverty level in china is more like 5-10% and the leadership pledges more and being one of the few that not only met their goals for poverty reduction a while ago they surpassed it to a great degree meaning their pledge now has weight. goes to show that just because you have a large population does not mean you have to have a large poverty level.

ps: The World Bank defines extreme poverty as living on less than US $1.25 (PPP) per day, and moderate poverty as less than $2 a day

well how do you define poverty?

its a pretty straightforward definition in my opinion.

An ungodly number of our citizens are unable to feed themselves, or educate themselves, or live a decent life.

Education can and most certainly has helped millions cross the poverty line, but the government needs continue to drive economic reforms to generate employment.

In the meantime, as responsible citizens, we must give back to the community by helping out whenever possible, so I urge all the members to put forth ways in which we can constructively contribute to help out our brethren.

I'm going to try and find a link to some community organizations, and I request all of you to forward those links to as many people as you can. You never know, you could send it to 10 people, who could then do the same, over and over again. If you choose to contribute, maybe others might do the same, so the more people we can actively engage the better.

I'll try and list a few ways we can help out, I think many people, including myself, don't know how they can help. I'm not suggesting that we devise ways to eradicate poverty, I'm saying we contribute to schemes already in place.

Which part of India are you from ? So 1 Billion INdian if educated there will be no poverty ?

What is decent life ? The villagers who earn less than 2$ per day have a much more decent life than you think.

What will happen if a Billion people work ?

I have adopted a kid. What have you done ?
