Turkish MPT-76s centre stage during Somalian Army graduation ceremony (Turkish Army)

Today’s photo features graduating Somalian Army conscripts being sworn in next to some new Turkish MPT-76 rifles and MG-3 general purpose machine guns made by Turkey’s state-owned small arms manufacturer MKEK. The photo was taken at a graduation ceremony for 185 Somalian officer cadets at the Somalian-Turkish Task Force Command in Mogadishu. The Ceremony was attended by Somalia’s National Defence Minister, Turkey’s ambassador to Mogadishu, Somalia’s chief of general staff and senior officers from the Task Force Command. A new cadre of officer cadets also began their training during the ceremony.

The 7.62x51mm MPT-76 was adopted by Turkey in 2016 and is currently in the process of replacing the Turkish army’s MKEK-made G3s. Turkey is one of Somalia major foreign defence suppliers with the two countries entering into a series of military cooperation agreements between 2010 and 2015. Various AK variant remain the Somalian Army’s standard issue rifle but it may be that Somalia are interested in purchasing the MPT-76 or other Turkish small arms in the future.

bunlara üzerinde TSK yazılı silah veriyorlar, ilk zoru gördüklerinde atıp kaçarlar, keşke moktan şeyler verseler keleş gibi.

it is sad to our MPTs on foreigners before our army complete its order.

You have earned the trust of the most backward nation in the world, my friend. They will pray and bless you for your help and this will not go wasted.

Kudos to the work of Turkish government in helping a genuinely needy country.

Didn't know MKEK still produces MG3's.I thought they were working on modified PKM a few years ago,not sure what happened to that project...

probably older than you boy. No one cares this kind of advertisement, look at Iran they donate even ballistic missile to syria and yemen, is there a country after those donations to buy iranian product?

real advertisement would be real export with good quality that we still lacks (pak ihalesinde ilk aşamada elendi, Tr de bilmem kaç testten geçti , hatta sinek ilacı testi bile yapmışlar ne demekse artık, NATO da en çok test edilen silah dediler, sahaya çıkınca birsürü problem yaşandı imalat bir süre durdu düzeltmelerden sonra tekrar başladılar neyse şimdi açtırma ağzımı)

You talk about National policy, National? are you kidding me? Erdo brought Russia,IRAN and China to our south border and US with whole west , i see your very NATIONAL policy, very national...

Unpopular opinion: We should get way more involved within Somalian politics. A united Somalia will be a powerfull ally in the region, as seen in Pre-Civil War Somalia who was a regional force to be reckoned with. I mean having a permanent presence within the Horn of Africa will be strategically and geopolitcally a massive succes, especially within a friendly country that can provide the neccesary infrastructure all by itself.

It is a great strategic thinking that you guys decided to collaborate with Somalia, which actually needs a guiding hand of a country that doesn't manipulate it for its own gains. Turkey's advantage by being in Somalia is that while there is no loss to Somali people. just because of the location, Turks gain regional prominence.

This is likely going to be a close call most of the time, given the fact that Chinese military base is just across the border in Eritrea; but most likely you both are in that region to ensure the same thing; safe transit of your global trade.

Uniting Somalia and Somaliland would be a really uphill task for you guys. Contrary to what many believe, Somaliland is actually pretty peaceful and is not rife with the same problems as the rest of Somalia. Their declaration of independence came due to more than just political differences. In fact, that region functions better than the rest of the country.

This means you will have to help in them setting aside the differences that other bigger powers have created. If you can de facto influence them through some miraculous strategy, nothing like it.

But you will have to economically get involved in that region. Maybe like help them make a freeport zone or something which is going to cost you millions of $$.

But it will ensure that you have a powerful transhipment secondary hub in the region.

A united Somalia will be very difficult with the UAE involved in Somalieland.

You need to calm down.

Doesn't stop you guys from trying. Turkey has immense goodwill in the MENA region and the countries would rather have you negotiate than say a USA or a Russia (given that they are viewed as those who set terms favourable to them geopolitically).

Turkey should not have any trouble convincing UAE and Somaliland to resolve their differences in a peaceful way and re-emerge.

The other alternative that you could do is work hard towards eliminating all problems of Somalia through increasing investments, education, commerce and expanding military relations with them to such an extent that Somalilanders actually see the benefit in re-uniting with Somalia.

That's the Chinese way of doing things; work so hard and intensely that growth becomes unstoppable and others want to join you voluntarily.

Example: Half the pacific island countries would kill to become US states.

The UAE and my country are not on good terms,in fact,we can be seen as enemies and it looks like thats not going to change for some time.

That is the goal eventually but time will,to many obstacles.
My country is working on it.

China has money,we dont,we do with what we have.

The tourist numbers ot Turkey from UAE say a different story. As long as you are not at war, you can definitely convince the leaders to actually consider you over the Saudis in the long term. They also know that you are here to stay versus Saudi Arabia who is likely to have its map re-drawn anytime in the next 10-15 years.

You have the knowledge and the skills.

Years of development since Ataturk's era has been the base of Turkey's infrastructural marvel, making Turkey at par or even exceed many European cities.

That's what you need to replicate. Turkish construction companies can make that happen. Also, you would have immense potential in overhauling Somalia's education sector along the lines that you have in your own country. Definitely if Somalis are appreciative and welcome you there, then they would favour your business much more compared to other countries. That is an added advantage.

What would be an icing on the cake is to secure meetings with rebelling factions and getting them onto a single table and show them how you want to build the country, irrespective of the different tribes and benefit them while at the same time generate revenue for Turkish investors.
