Surprise surprise
Based on 1961 data? Seriously you want us to consider this in 2017? In 1961, most polygamy incidents have occurred before independence.
The Hindu marriage act which prohibits it among Hindus was itself become law in 1955. Can you quote some latest figure for fact based discussion?

.
Are Hindus getting married here r Muslims ?

Then you might as well shut up if u can't do anything about it.
That amounts to Desi dog barking in foreign land

Don't get agitated. I was responding to your fellow countryman's insinuation.

What is amusing is that instead of reprimanding his post you are trying to find fault with my post where there is none.

You're genius bro! A true Hindu. That will solve all your problems overnight, not only rapes! :enjoy:

If I am a true Hindu or not is debatable but I am a very practical person.

Ask your govt to hold a religion based survey again we may end up getting 2017 figures

I would be very pleased with that :-)
Why?
In the census, You want an option for "do you have more than 1 wife?" for Hindus, when it is clearly BANNED?
Can't you understand, more than 1 wife is ILLEGAL as per Hindu marriage act which came around somewhere when that census was taken.
We have our census always on time. Thanks

Polyandry? Marrying young girls to dogs and cats? Keeping young girls as sex slaves in temples? Chopping genitals of brahmins who think low caste girls are an easy way to satisfy lust? Protecting young college girls from getting raped? ..... only few suggestions if you could include in your list of rights for women .............. don't restrict your good wishes for Muslim women only.....
Hindus has banned these practices by passing laws long time ago. But few incidents here and there doesnot represent the whole society. In current muslim society in India, polygamy is not illegal. This will be made illegal soon as it is not a religious practice but local or social practice. We are not saying every muslim does it, but there are sizeable amount of women who are suffering because of this practice because their males are misusing it for their own benefits.

Are you in favor of polygamy yourself?

.
Why would I be happy? I am not Indian am I?

Please try that in India and see what happens

Well a few posts back on this thread, you were one who expressed concern on the position taken by Government of India and now you say you are not an Indian and you don't care.

When the religion gives them the right to polygamy, you cannot, therefore consider it as custom

.
Exact data on the subject is hard to come by, primarily because the 1961 census was the last one to look at marriages by religion and community.

If we dont have latest data available we take the most recent one as an indication of ground realities btw i have zero issues with India banning the above mentioned practices but it would be wrong to call it an issue of one community only
But not 50 years old data. The sanity is to get the latest figures. Much water has passed in these times.
But yes, it should be universal law to every citizen of India irrespective of religion, caste, creed and tribe.

. .
Do you understand the reason why its legal? The historical background of this practice? And when this should stop?
Not all historical background are valid in today;s world. but I am all ears to hear your understanding of it.

Not all historical background are valid in today;s world.

In today's world its still valid in more than one country. As you will see.

but I am all ears to hear your understanding of it.

"Far Reaching Implications of Gender Gaps
In most countries across the world, the population is made up of more men than women. Some nations, however, have a population made up of more women. The gender imbalance in these countries can be traced back to war and conflicts. Studies show that this disparity is not desirable. These countries have a high number of well- educated women who earn a high level of income but cannot find partners. Gender disparities in wages also put an economic strain on these countries. Men are more likely to suffer from mental health problems since more pressure is put on them to provide for the family."

Islam cares about humans and their problems, that's why it allowed upto 4 wives at that time to cater for the gender gap. The reason for gender gap was wars, conflicts that would leave women widows and children orphan. And would result in disparity in gender ratio.

However, where the number of male is equivalent to females or number of males exceeds females, polygamy should stop because the reason and need for it becomes redundant. So india or any country with Muslim population can back it's action with recent research on gender ratio.

Because India is not communist nation like China. Or is it now ? In that case if Islam has to go there so be it. Then let all the religions go too. Why specifically targeting Islam ?

What is amusing is that instead of reprimanding his post you are trying to find fault with my post where there is n
There is ! Hence which is why I pulled you up. Oh as for my countrymen, he merely presented an idea, he didn't suggest as something WO extreme as to prevent one from going to mosques. I wholeheartedly support his argument

ill be made illegal soon as it is not a religious practice but local or social practice. We are not
Who the fk says that it is not religious but social ?
Damnit if religion allows me that doesn't mean it is social. You can restrict my choice because as a person I have choice. I should be free to choose, if I want more than wife or not. Who are you to discriminate me against that.
-- speaking as a person who oppose this move even if it were in Pakistan, not targeting because it is India

Polygyny (marriage of man to more than one wife at a time) is allowed but it's opposite Polyandry (marriage of one woman to more than one men at a time) is not allowed. It has it's own logical reasons.

State can interfere to ensure that Muslim women’s fundamental rights are not violated”
Polygamy is not a religious practice, but rather a social custom or usage which the State can interfere with to ensure that Muslim women’s fundamental rights are not violated, the Centre told the Supreme Court.

“Practices such as polygamy cannot be described as being sanctioned by religion, inasmuch as historically, polygamy prevailed across communities for several centuries including the ancient Greeks and Romans, Hindus, Jews and Zoroastrians. It had less to do with religion and more to do with social norms at the time,” the Centre said in its written submissions filed late on Monday in the Supreme Court.
In the Holy Koran as well, it appears that the prevalent or perhaps even rampant practice of polygamy in pre-Islamic society was sought to be regulated and restricted so as to treat women better than they were treated in pre-Islamic times,” the government, represented by Attorney-General Mukul Rohatgi and advocate Madhavi Divan, submitted.

‘Not protected’
The government said since polygamy was a social custom and not a religious practice, it was not protected under Article 25 of the Constitution, which bars the State from interfering with “someone’s religious belief.”

It is submitted that the practice of polygamy is a social practice rather than a religious one and therefore would not be protected under Article 25. This is true also of nikah halala and triple talaq. For the same reason, polygamy would amount to a custom or usage, which is “law” within the meaning of Article 13 and therefore subject to fundamental rights,” the Centre argued. Since a social practice cannot be held to be an integral part of a faith and belief or an “essential religious practice,” it has to satisfy the overarching constitutional goal of gender equality, gender justice and dignity, the government submitted.

The government argued that reforms have not happened in the practices followed by the Muslim community despite clear indications. “The same has not happened for over six and a half decades and women who comprise a very sizeable proportion of the said Indian population [approximately 8% of the population of India, i.e. 96.68 million approximately, as per 2011 census] remain extremely vulnerable, both socially as well as financially,” the government pointed out.
It said gender equality and the dignity of women were “non-negotiable.”

The Supreme Court has fixed for May 11 the Constitution Bench hearings on a batch of petitions on triple talaq and polygamy .

A Hindu guy may have relations with 30 women, even he marries two of them, why always muslims are target of everything.
I know many many Hindus, even some celebrities who have two wives. It is not mentioned in anywhere in Hindu scriptures that polygamy is prohibited. Even some avtars have many many wives(according to Hindu scriptures).

The difference is, in Hindus and associated sister faiths, polygamy is illegal by our own choice of reforms.

With the kind of rapid population increase India is seeing, it is a social decision to ban such practises so that the population doesn't explode and cause a strain on our resources.

Which is why non-Muslims agreed to monogamy reforms in the first place.

Your lot are the only ones left for the reform so as a social benefit and long term benefit of the nation, it is best that the practise, polygamy be banned.

Nothing religious; just changing times need different laws.
