The National Assembly (NA) Wednesday adopted a resolution against TV anchorpersons criticising parliamentarians ‘without ascertaining facts’ and demanded the owners of media houses expel them.

The house in a short time also introduced two bills: 'Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design (Amendment) Bill‚ 2013’ and 'The Surveying and Mapping Bill‚ 2013’. It also passed 'The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, Bill-2013'.

The resolution against the anchorpersons was unanimously passed by the lawmakers from across the political divide who also bashed certain media persons who they said were doing ‘biased and sub-standard’ journalism by targeting parliamentarians.

The resolution moved by PML-Q’s Shikeh Waqas Akram said, All those anchor persons who are doing programs against parliamentarians and others without verification of the facts under some “personal agenda or for some ulterior motives, or for some unlawful gains”, have been “exposed for their non-professional conduct”. It said that “this house strongly condemns such anchorpersons and demand the owners of media houses expel them forthwith besides other due action”.

Earlier, Minister for Education and Training Shaikh Waqas strongly criticised Mubashir Lucman, an anchor of a private channel, alleging him of conducting programs against the parliamentarians under some personal agenda. “I would send him a legal notice soon,” he said, adding that Mubashir was doing propaganda on behest of some banned organisation. He, however, said that a large number of journalists were performing their duties with dignity and respect. Upon this, Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza said that the parliament was supreme institution and all other institutions should respect it. “I am even ready to go to court for prestige of the parliament,” she remarked. She said that there should be responsible reporting taking care of moralities and norms.

Taking the floor, PML-N legislator Abdul Qadir Khanzada supported Sheikh Waqas against Mubashir, saying that all parliamentarians should boycott his program. On his turn, PPP Minister Rehman Malik said that action should be taken against those media persons who are levelling false allegations at lawmakers. Saying that the politicians were being maligned and humiliated, he requested the chair for a probe into the issue.

MQM MNA Asif Hasnain also said that some anchors were involved in maligning the politicians which was highly condemnable act. ANP legislator Bushra Gohar opined that such anchors must not be given importance by discussing them in the parliament. Another MNA Ejaz Jakhrani, on point of order, said that he had sent a legal notice to an anchor person in London.

In response to a question raised by PPP MNA Shazia Marri, Defence Minister Naved Qamar said that government was seriously considering unblocking YouTube website and hinted the block could go before dissolution of current assemblies. Shazia Marri urged the government to reopen the website to facilitate students and researchers. She however said the website’s blockade on October 18 was justified because profane contents on the website can never be allowed.

Taking floor for the second time, ANP’s Bushra Gohar said Punjab government should clarify its position regarding its links with the proscribed organisations. She further said security agencies should play effective role to maintain law and order situation in the country. Earlier, about debate on law and order situation, Rehman Malik said he would inform the house about the government performance and "I will also welcome queries from the parliamentarians".

The house later passed the securities and exchange commission bill. Its statement of objects and reasons said that purpose of the bill was to amend the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan Act-1997 to make it more effective. The amendments would remove certain practical difficulties experienced in protecting the enforcement and other related actions of the commission, it said.
